Calving usually takes place between January – February to March of each year. In January the herds begin making their way to the south of the Serengeti after the rains start falling. The question of how the herds know when it is raining or not is something many people have questioned and the answer is that we actually do not know! Many people say that they can smell the rain, others believe they can sense when the pressure in the air changes. The only thing we know for sure is that where it rains, the herds follow. Within a two to three-week time period, over half a million wildebeest are born with as many as 8 000 wildebeest being born on the same day!

The eastern plains of the Serengeti ecosystem encompass a massive area. They begin roughly just east of Naabi Hill. They extend east through the Gol Kopjes, Lemuta Hill, Nasera Rock, AngataKiti, the Salei Plains and all the way to the Ngorongoro Highlands. The mountains shelter colonies of Ruppell's Griffon Vultures. Wildebeest cover the central-east valleys on their way north after the long rains, and some pour through the scenic bottleneck of the AngataKiti pastures during the shorter rains on their way back south. But with or without the migratory millions, this area is breathtaking for its immensity and feeling of freedomthe world famous Ngorongoro Crater.
Lobo, at the eastern edge of the Serengeti National Park and on a small stretch of the Grumeti River that offers excellent year-round game observation, gives unrivaled views of grassland and kopjes. This 7-Day Great Serengeti Migration (Western Corridor) Safari package has been designed specifically to focus on and to increase your chance to see the great Serengeti Wildebeest Migration and a full day game drive in central Serengeti (Seronera). By the end of April, the wildebeest migration starts to spread west across the plains towards the Seronera area (central Serengeti) and Western Corridor (western Serengeti). The majority of the migration can normally be seen in the Seronera area (or just south of the Seronera, in the southern plains) from April to May. In June the majority of the migration can then be found in the Western Corridor. The Western Corridor is a narrow stretch of land that stretches from the west of Seronera to the Western Serengeti National Park border. The Western corridor is one of the areas where the migrating animals are forced to cross the Grumeti River. This normally happens when the animals leave the southern plains and begin heading north. Please note witnessing a crossing is a matter of luck.
