10 Days Kenya Wildlife Photography Trail: Samburu Rarities to Amboseli Elephants

Capture Samburu’s rare species, Lake Nakuru rhinos, Maasai Mara predators, Naivasha birds and Amboseli elephants on a 10-day Kenya photo safari.

A 10-day luxury photography journey featuring northern special species, rhinos, Mara predators, lake birds and elephant landscapes.

Our 10-Day Kenya Wildlife Photography Trail has been carefully designed for photographers who want to capture more than a collection of quick animal sightings. You will begin in Samburu, where dry northern landscapes provide striking backgrounds for reticulated giraffes, Grevy’s zebras, gerenuks, Beisa oryx, elephants and possible predators. Lake Nakuru introduces greener woodland, lakeshore birdlife and important rhino habitats before our safari continues into the Maasai Mara for two complete photography days among lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, hyenas and wide savannah scenery. Lake Naivasha offers a peaceful freshwater photography experience with hippos, fish eagles, pelicans and reflections, while Amboseli completes the expedition with elephant families, wetlands and possible Mount Kilimanjaro views. Your private safari vehicle gives you additional room for lenses and camera bags, easier access to different viewing positions and more freedom to wait patiently when wildlife behaviour begins to develop.

Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu – Our Photography Journey Begins

Nairobi to Samburu – Our Photography Journey Begins

Our safari begins when your professional driver-guide collects you from your Nairobi hotel, private residence, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or Wilson Airport between approximately 6:30 AM and 7:30 AM. After helping you organise your cameras and personal luggage, our journey will cover approximately 310–340 kilometres and normally take 5½–7 hours depending on traffic, road conditions and your lodge location. You will pass through central Kenya’s fertile highlands, farms, roadside towns and gradually drier northern scenery, with stops arranged for lunch, refreshments, washrooms and authorised landscape photography. After arriving at your luxury lodge or tented camp, you will check in and prepare your equipment. When daylight and reserve-entry conditions permit, you will enjoy a short afternoon photography drive for elephants, reticulated giraffes, Grevy’s zebras and warm evening landscapes.

Day 2: Full-Day Samburu Special-Species Photography

Full-Day Samburu Special-Species Photography

After an early breakfast, you will leave with a picnic lunch or follow a divided morning-and-afternoon programme, depending on your lodge location and photography priorities. Our vehicle may cover approximately 40–90 kilometres over seven to nine hours while your guide searches Samburu’s dry plains, rocky terrain and river environment for Grevy’s zebras, reticulated giraffes, gerenuks, Beisa oryx, Somali ostriches, elephants, lions, leopards and raptors. Your guide will consider light direction, clean backgrounds and animal movement instead of rushing from one radio report to another. The greener Ewaso Nyiro River corridor may provide beautiful contrasts between dry country and animals gathering around water.

Samburu to Lake Nakuru – From Northern Earth Tones to Rift Valley Green

After breakfast and lodge check-out, you may enjoy a short exit photography drive when timing and reserve arrangements allow. Our road journey will then cover approximately 275–300 kilometres and normally take 5½–6½ hours as you travel south through ranchland, cultivated highlands, towns and changing Rift Valley scenery. Your guide will arrange lunch, refreshment, washroom and scenic photography stops along the way. After arriving at your luxury Lake Nakuru accommodation, you will have time to charge batteries, clean lenses, back up images and rest before the following morning’s rhino photography session.

Possible subjects include white or black rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes, buffaloes, baboons, waterbucks, zebras, pelicans and cormorants. After returning for lunch and check-out, our safari will continue approximately 220–260 kilometres toward the Maasai Mara, normally taking five to six hours depending on traffic, road conditions and camp location. After breakfast, you will leave with a picnic lunch for approximately seven to nine hours of wildlife photography. Our vehicle may travel around 60–100 kilometres while searching open plains, woodland, marshes and water points for lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, hyenas, jackals, vultures and grazing herds. Your guide will allow you to remain at productive sightings when animal behaviour is developing, whether a lion pride is interacting, elephants are travelling with calves or a cheetah is carefully watching the plains. Second Full-Day Maasai Mara Behaviour and Landscape Photography

Our second complete Mara day allows you to explore habitats not fully covered during the previous safari. You may travel approximately 50–100 kilometres during seven to nine hours of photography, concentrating on river environments for hippos, crocodiles, herons and kingfishers, wooded drainage lines for leopards and resting lions or open plains for elephants and cheetahs. The additional day also gives you time for wide environmental portraits, birds, silhouettes, storm skies and behavioural sequences. Your guide will adjust the route according to the subjects still missing from your portfolio rather than repeating the previous day unnecessarily.

RELATED FAQS ABOUT 10 Days Kenya Wildlife Photography Trail: Samburu Rarities to Amboseli Elephants

    1. Is this photography safari suitable for beginners?

Yes. You do not need to be a professional photographer to enjoy our tour. Your guide can help you understand animal behaviour, likely movement and responsible vehicle positioning, although formal lessons on camera settings are not automatically included. Beginners should practise autofocus, exposure and shutter-speed controls before travelling so they can respond quickly when wildlife becomes active.

    2. Which camera lenses should I bring?

A telephoto lens is useful for wildlife and birds, while a shorter zoom or wide-angle lens is valuable for landscapes, elephants and environmental portraits. Many photographers carry two camera bodies to reduce lens changes in dusty conditions. Spare batteries, memory cards, cleaning equipment and protective bags are strongly recommended.

    3. Are Samburu’s rare species guaranteed?

No. Reticulated giraffes, Grevy’s zebras, gerenuks, oryx and Somali ostriches occur in the region, but they move naturally according to water, food and weather conditions. Our full-day safari allows time to search several habitats, but a responsible operator cannot guarantee an individual species.

    4. Will we definitely photograph a leopard?

Leopards occur in Samburu and the Maasai Mara, but they are secretive and may remain hidden even during a productive safari. Our itinerary provides several opportunities, yet no guide can promise a leopard photograph.

    5. Can we remain longer at a good sighting?

Yes, when wildlife behaviour, park regulations and road conditions allow. A private vehicle gives you more flexibility than a shared safari. Your guide must still avoid blocking animals, damaging vegetation or contributing to excessive vehicle congestion.

    6. Are charging facilities available at every lodge?

Most luxury lodges provide charging facilities, although remote camps may operate electricity during selected hours. You should charge batteries whenever power is available and carry several spares. A reliable travel adapter and power bank are useful.

    7. Is Mount Kilimanjaro always visible from Amboseli?

No. Cloud, haze and weather can hide the mountain completely. Amboseli remains an excellent photography destination because of its elephants, wetlands, birds and wide landscapes even when the summit cannot be seen.

    8. Can we use drones?

Drone operation requires approval from aviation, wildlife and reserve authorities. Guests should never assume personal drone use is automatically allowed. Unauthorised operation may lead to penalties or confiscation.

    9. How should we back up our photographs?

Back up your files regularly using multiple memory cards, a laptop or portable drive. Important copies should be kept in separate bags. Waiting until the final night creates unnecessary risk if a card is damaged or lost.

    10. Can another photography day be added?

Yes. An extra night in Samburu, the Maasai Mara or Amboseli can provide more time for changing light, weather and wildlife behaviour. Extensions should be arranged before lodges and park fees are confirmed.

A Photography Route with Genuine Variety

    5/5

Samburu’s dry earth tones, Lake Nakuru’s green woodland, the Mara’s open plains and Amboseli’s wetlands created completely different images. Our portfolio felt like a journey across Kenya rather than ten days of repeating the same safari scene.

    Patient Guiding Produced Better Images

    5/5

Our guide understood when to wait. We remained with an elephant family long after several vehicles had moved away, and the calves eventually began interacting. Those photographs became some of my favourites because they showed real behaviour rather than a quick animal portrait.
