Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli – Wetland and Woodland Birding

Nairobi to Amboseli – Wetland and Woodland Birding

Our Amboseli wetlands birdwatching safari departs Nairobi in the morning with a private guide and vehicle. As you travel south, our guide will introduce the major habitat zones and help you prepare a target list based on the season. After arriving at your midrange accommodation, you will enjoy lunch before heading into the park with binoculars, cameras and notebooks ready. The afternoon birding session will move slowly between wetland edges, acacia woodland and grassland, giving you time to study calls, plumage and feeding behaviour. Possible observations include herons, egrets, storks, kingfishers, lapwings, weavers and birds of prey, together with elephants and other Amboseli wildlife.

Day 2: Dawn Birding Across Amboseli – Checklist and Nairobi

Dawn Birding Across Amboseli – Checklist and Nairobi

You will begin the day early, when bird calls are active and temperatures are cooler. Our guide will select productive habitats according to recent sightings, water conditions and your personal interests. You will search for wetland species near the marshes, raptors over the open plains and smaller birds among the acacia trees. The programme focuses on careful identification rather than simply counting species, allowing time for photographs and behavioural observations. After enjoying a picnic lunch, our birdwatching safari continues through another section of Amboseli before your guide reviews the day’s checklist. You will then travel to Nairobi for an evening drop-off.

RELATED FAQS ABOUT 2 Days Amboseli Wetlands Birdwatching Safari – Midrange Package

    1. Which Amboseli habitats are covered?

The itinerary may cover permanent wetlands, seasonal lake areas, open savannah, acacia woodland and dry bush habitats.

    2. Do we receive a specialist ornithologist?

The standard package provides a bird-knowledgeable safari guide. A specialist ornithologist can be requested at an additional cost.

    3. Can guests submit a target-species list?

Yes. Send the list before departure so our guide can identify suitable habitats, while understanding that wild bird sightings cannot be guaranteed.

    4. Is the birdwatching pace different from a normal game drive?

Yes. Birding involves slower movement, more frequent stops and additional time spent observing small species and listening for calls.

    5. Does the tour follow ethical birding practices?

Yes. Guests should avoid disturbing nests, feeding birds or approaching sensitive species. The guide’s instructions must always be followed.

    6. Is recorded bird-call playback used?

Playback is not encouraged routinely because it may disturb birds. Any limited use must follow conservation rules and the guide’s professional judgment.

    7. Can we search for owls during this package?

Standard drives operate during permitted daytime hours. Owl sightings may occur naturally, but nocturnal birding is not included.

    8. Can guests upload the checklist to a birding application?

Yes. You can record the sightings in your preferred application or notebook after identification has been reviewed with the guide.

    9. Will low water levels affect birdwatching?

Water levels influence the location and number of wetland species, but dry grassland and woodland habitats may still provide rewarding sightings.

    10. Do we stop for mammals during a birding safari?

Yes. Elephants, giraffes, hippos, buffaloes and predators remain part of the experience, although the principal emphasis is birdwatching.

    Wetland Birds with Elephants Nearby

    5/5

Amboseli produced a fascinating mixture of waterbirds, grassland species and raptors. At one wetland, we watched herons and egrets feeding while an elephant family crossed behind them. That combination made the tour truly distinctive.

    More Habitats Than I Expected

    5/5

I had imagined Amboseli as a dry elephant park, but the wetland habitats were remarkably active. We moved from waterbirds to open-country raptors and then smaller woodland species within the same day.
