Starting in Nairobi, you will cross the Great Rift Valley and enter Lake Nakuru National Park for an afternoon birding and wildlife drive. The park’s lakeshore, woodland, grassland and rocky habitats support an impressive variety of resident and seasonal species. Our birding guide will meet you in Nairobi at approximately 6:30 a.m. for the 160-kilometre journey to Lake Nakuru, normally taking three and a half to four hours. During the drive, you can discuss your target species and personal birding interests. After checking into your luxury lodge, you will enjoy lunch and a short rest before entering the park at approximately 3:00 p.m. The afternoon exploration will cover a mixture of lakeshore, woodland and open grassland habitats. Depending on current conditions, you may look for pelicans, flamingos, fish eagles, cormorants, kingfishers, herons, storks, lapwings and birds of prey. Mammals such as rhinos, giraffes, zebras and buffaloes may also appear during the drive. You will return to the lodge at around 6:30 p.m. to review your checklist, enjoy dinner and relax.

Day 2: Early Birding Session – Drive Back to Nairobi

Early Birding Session – Drive Back to Nairobi

You will wake at around 5:30 a.m. and begin your morning birdwatching experience shortly after the park opens. Early hours are ideal for listening to calls, observing feeding behaviour and exploring habitats before the day becomes warmer. Our guide will move slowly through productive sections of the park, stopping when you identify an interesting bird or need time for binocular observation and photography. Species vary with season, rainfall and lake conditions, making every visit different. After approximately three hours of birding, you will return to the lodge for breakfast and complete your checklist before checking out at around 10:30 a.m. You will then depart for Nairobi, stopping for lunch along the way. Arrival is generally between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m., followed by drop-off at your hotel, residence or airport where timing permits.
