This 2-day Premium Lake Nakuru birdwatching safari combines guided birding, classic African wildlife and high-quality accommodation within a convenient journey from Nairobi. You will travel approximately 160–175 kilometres each way through the Great Rift Valley, with a normal driving time of 3.5–4 hours. Afternoon and early-morning drives explore lakeshore, wetland, woodland, grassland and rocky habitats that support an impressive variety of resident and migratory birds. Depending on natural and seasonal conditions, you may encounter flamingos, pelicans, fish eagles, cormorants, kingfishers, herons and numerous raptors. Rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes, buffaloes, zebras and other mammals add another rewarding dimension to this premium Lake Nakuru safari.

Day 1: Nairobi to Lake Nakuru

Rift Valley Birding Journey

At approximately 6:30 a.m. in Nairobi, our guide will collect you for the 160–175-kilometre journey to Lake Nakuru. The transfer takes around 3.5–4 hours and may include a stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint. Safe roadside bird sightings can also be noted without unnecessarily delaying the itinerary.

Birding Preparation and Lunch

At approximately 11:30 a.m. in the Lake Nakuru area, you will check in at your premium accommodation and enjoy lunch. During the break, our guide will discuss productive habitats and possible bird species. You will have time to prepare your binoculars, field guide, camera and observation notes.

Afternoon Birdwatching Drive

At approximately 2:30 p.m. inside Lake Nakuru National Park, you will begin exploring the lakeshore, grasslands and acacia woodland. Possible sightings include flamingos, pelicans, African fish eagles, herons, cormorants and kingfishers. You will also watch for rhinos, buffaloes and giraffes before returning to the lodge at around 6:00 p.m.

Day 2: Morning Birding and Nairobi

Early-Morning Birding

At approximately 6:00 a.m. inside Lake Nakuru National Park, our guide will lead an early birdwatching drive while calls and activity are at their strongest. You will visit suitable habitats for waterbirds, woodland species, raptors and colourful smaller birds. The route will remain flexible according to seasonal sightings and current park conditions.

Breakfast and Sightings Review

At around 8:30 a.m. at the lodge, you will enjoy breakfast and review the species recorded during the safari. Our guide can help clarify difficult identifications using photographs or field guides. Check-out is expected at approximately 10:00 a.m.

Return to Nairobi

At approximately 10:30 a.m. from Lake Nakuru, our journey back to Nairobi will begin. The drive covers around 160–175 kilometres and normally takes 3.5–4 hours, excluding a possible lunch stop. Drop-off is expected between 3:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. at your selected Nairobi location.

1. How many bird species have been recorded at Lake Nakuru?

More than 450 species have been recorded across the park’s varied habitats. The number observed during your visit will depend on the season, water level, weather and migration patterns.

2. Are flamingo sightings guaranteed?

No wildlife sighting can be guaranteed. Flamingo numbers change with water chemistry, food availability and conditions at other Rift Valley lakes.

3. Is this safari suitable for beginner birdwatchers?

Yes. Our guide can introduce beginners to identification, behaviour and habitat while also supporting experienced birders with detailed observations.

4. Should I bring my own binoculars?

Personal binoculars are strongly recommended for the best experience. Shared or rental binoculars may be arranged in advance, subject to availability.

5. Can I send a target-species list?

Yes. Send your list before the tour so our guide can consider the most suitable habitats. However, the presence of particular wild species cannot be promised

6. Will we also see mammals?

Yes. Birdwatching drives can produce sightings of rhinos, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, baboons and antelopes. Predators may also be encountered.

7. What is the best birdwatching season?

Birdwatching is rewarding throughout the year. Migratory species may increase diversity during parts of the wetter season, while resident species can be observed year-round

8. Can the vehicle stop whenever we see a bird

Our guide will stop when it is safe and permitted under park regulations. Guests must remain inside the vehicle except in officially designated areas.

9. What equipment should I pack?

Bring binoculars, a field guide or birding application, a notebook, camera, sun protection and a light rain jacket. A telephoto lens is helpful for bird photography.

10. Can additional birding destinations be included?

Yes. Lake Naivasha, Kakamega Forest, Samburu and Maasai Mara can be added. We can build a longer itinerary around your preferred habitats and target species.
