2 Days Tanzania Birdwatching Safari to Lake Manyara

Your journey begins with an early morning flight to save hours of driving, landing you right at the heart of the action. You will spend the first afternoon in Manyara and the second day exploring the crater floor. The scenic return drive to Arusha on the final evening takes about three to four hours depending on traffic conditions.

Because you are using small bush planes for the inward leg, there is a strict weight limit of fifteen kilograms per person. We recommend using soft-sided duffel bags because they fit much more easily into the aircraft cargo pod. If you have extra baggage, our team can arrange for it to be transported by road to your final destination in Arusha.

Lake Manyara is one of the few places in the world where lions frequently lounge in the branches of acacia trees. Your guide will take you through the groundwater forest and along the lakeshore to find them during your first afternoon. This park is also home to massive troops of baboons and elegant pink flamingos that cover the lake.

The second day focuses entirely on the crater floor, which is a natural sanctuary for the Big Five. You have a very high chance of spotting the rare black rhino and large prides of lions in this enclosed volcanic caldera. After a full day of viewing, you will begin your comfortable return drive to the city.

The package covers all meals starting from lunch on the first day to a packed picnic lunch on the second day. You will enjoy a hot dinner and a fresh breakfast at your chosen lodge or tented camp near Karatu. We can definitely include a stop at a Maasai village on the second afternoon before we head back to Arusha. This provides a wonderful opportunity to learn about traditional customs and beadwork directly from the local community. We use a customized 4x4 safari Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof for the best viewing and photography experience. The vehicle is equipped with charging ports for your cameras and an onboard cooler for cold beverages. This same car will meet you at the airstrip and take you all the way back to your hotel.

You will typically land at the Lake Manyara Airstrip, which sits right on the edge of the Great Rift Valley wall. From here, it is a very short drive to the national park gate or your overnight accommodation in the highlands. This aerial arrival saves you approximately four hours of road travel on your first day of safari.

The flight provides unique aerial photography opportunities of the Rift Valley and Lake Manyara from above. While the standard package includes a road return, we can upgrade your itinerary to a fly-out option for an additional fee. This would involve another bush flight from the Manyara airstrip on the second evening to save more time.
