August is the height of the dry season, so you can look forward to clear blue skies and very little rain. The mornings are quite chilly in the northern highlands, but the afternoons are pleasantly warm and perfect for game viewing.

During this dry month, the Tarangire River becomes the only reliable water source for miles, drawing massive herds of elephants and plains game. You will witness incredible wildlife concentrations as animals congregate along the riverbanks to drink and socialize

August offers excellent visibility because the vegetation is thinner, making it easier to spot lions lounging on acacia branches. Our experienced guides know the best circuits to search for these unique predators during your afternoon game drive.

You should definitely bring warm layers like a fleece or jacket for the cold early morning starts. Sunscreen, a wide brimmed hat, and high quality binoculars are also vital for enjoying the dusty but clear conditions in the bush.

Since August is peak season, the parks can be busier, but our guides are experts at finding quieter tracks away from the main crowds. We typically start our game drives very early to ensure you get the best viewing spots before other vehicles arrive.

The dry season does mean the tracks can get quite dusty, so we recommend bringing a light scarf or buff to cover your face when needed. We also provide wet wipes in the vehicle to help you stay refreshed after a long day of exploring the savanna.

Even without the migratory species from Europe, the resident bird population around the lake remains spectacular in August. You will see large numbers of flamingos, pelicans, and storks feeding in the receding waters of the soda lake.
