3 Days Midrange February Ndutu Wildebeest Calving Safari

Early Departure and Highlands

After breakfast, our safari driver-guide will collect you in Arusha at approximately 6:00 a.m. The 260–280 km journey passes Mto wa Mbu, Karatu and the Ngorongoro highlands before descending toward the seasonal plains. Allow 5½–6½ hours of driving, with additional time for entry procedures, a comfort stop and changing road conditions.

Calving-Season Arrival

A packed lunch is normally served around 12:30 p.m. before the roof is raised for your first February game drive. Our guide will search current herd areas, where wildebeest mothers, young calves, zebras and Thomson’s gazelles may be accompanied by lions, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, vultures and other grassland wildlife.

Evening near the Herds

Viewing continues until approximately 6:00 p.m., using ethical positioning that leaves animals a clear path. No vehicle should surround a mother and calf or interfere with predator–prey behaviour. You will then reach your midrange camp for check-in, dinner and a briefing about the full day ahead.

Dawn among the Herds

The day begins around 5:30 a.m. with tea or coffee, followed by departure near 6:00 a.m. Breakfast may be served at camp or packed for a field stop. At this cooler hour, our guide will look for herd movement, fresh tracks and natural predator activity while preserving a respectful distance from vulnerable calves.

Calves, Predators and Plains Ecology

Your route may combine southern plains, woodland margins and the Lake Ndutu–Lake Masek area according to wildlife concentration and access. The guide will explain synchronized calving, maternal behaviour, scavengers and the survival pressures facing young wildebeest. A picnic lunch around 12:30 p.m. provides a rest without losing the central wildlife-viewing hours.

Afternoon Behaviour

The game drive resumes through late afternoon, when changing light and temperature can produce different behaviour from the morning. You will return to camp around 6:00 p.m. for dinner and the second overnight stay. Although February is an important calving month, births and hunts occur unpredictably and are never staged or guaranteed.

Quiet Morning Observation

Following tea or coffee, you will leave camp at approximately 6:00 a.m. for a final half-day wildlife drive. Our guide will decide whether to revisit active herds or explore a quieter habitat, giving attention to calves, mothers, predators, scavengers and birds rather than repeating yesterday’s exact route.

Field Breakfast and Check-Out

Breakfast may be enjoyed at a permitted picnic point or after returning to the lodge. Game viewing finishes around 10:30–11:00 a.m., followed by check-out and an early lunch or packed meal. This schedule keeps the final morning useful while leaving enough daylight for the road journey.

Scenic Transfer to Arusha

The return begins close to noon and covers 260–280 km, depending on your accommodation track. Driving through the highlands and Karatu normally requires 5½–6½ hours plus formalities and comfort stops. Expected arrival is around 6:00–7:30 p.m., with drop-off at your Arusha hotel or agreed central address.
