Our 3-Day Premium Samburu Birding Wilderness Tour is designed for birdwatchers who want to explore the varied habitats of Kenya’s arid north while enjoying premium comfort and private guiding. The road journey from Nairobi covers approximately 320 kilometres and normally takes six to seven hours. After checking into your premium lodge or luxury camp, you will enjoy an afternoon birding game drive, separate morning and afternoon sessions on Day 2 and a final sunrise birding drive before returning to Nairobi. Samburu’s river corridor, dry bushland, rocky slopes and open plains may produce raptors, vultures, hornbills, bee-eaters, kingfishers, weavers, starlings, bustards and other resident or seasonal species. Our guide will also interpret elephants, reticulated giraffes, Grevy’s zebras, gerenuks, Beisa oryx and other mammals encountered during the birding activities. The private vehicle provides flexibility for binoculars, photography, checklist notes and patient identification.

Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu Birding Wilderness

Early Northern Birding Journey

At approximately 5:15 AM in Nairobi, our guide will collect you from your hotel or agreed meeting point. Binoculars, cameras and field guides will be arranged safely before the 320-kilometre journey begins, with breakfast and comfort stops included.

Lodge Arrival and Birding Preparation

At around 12:30–1:30 PM in the Samburu area, you will check into your premium lodge or luxury camp and enjoy lunch. The early afternoon provides time to rest and discuss the likely birds and habitats with our guide.

Riverine Birding Drive

From approximately 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM inside Samburu National Reserve, you will explore woodland, riverbanks and open bushland in search of kingfishers, hornbills, raptors, starlings and other species. Elephants and rare northern mammals may also be encountered.

Day 2: Morning and Afternoon Samburu Birding

Sunrise Bird Activity

At around 6:00 AM inside Samburu National Reserve, you will begin a morning birding drive when many species are feeding, calling or moving through the cooler landscape. Our guide will allow time for identification, photography and checklist notes.

Breakfast and Checklist Review

At approximately 9:00 AM at your premium lodge, you will return for breakfast and review the morning species. You can relax, enjoy lunch and use photographs or field guides to discuss uncertain identifications.

Afternoon Dryland Birding

From around 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM inside the reserve, you will explore drier plains, rocky areas and bushland for raptors, bustards, ostriches and smaller species. The drive may also produce Grevy’s zebras, gerenuks and reticulated giraffes.

Day 3: Final Birding Drive and Nairobi

Sunrise Species Search

At approximately 6:00 AM inside Samburu National Reserve, you will enjoy a final birdwatching drive focused on habitats and species not fully covered during the previous sessions. Our guide will revisit productive areas where appropriate.

Breakfast and Final Checklist

At around 9:00 AM at the lodge, you will return for breakfast and complete a final species review. Check-out will follow at approximately 10:00 AM after your luggage and equipment have been organised.

Return to Nairobi

From around 10:00 AM, you will travel approximately 320 kilometres back to Nairobi in six to seven hours. A lunch and refreshment stop will be included before final drop-off.

1. Is Samburu a good destination for birdwatching?

Yes. The reserve combines riverine forest, open bushland, rocky areas and arid plains, allowing birders to experience several habitat types. The dry northern environment supports species that may not be common in wetter parks farther south.

2. Are binoculars provided?

Travellers are encouraged to bring personal binoculars because magnification, weight and viewing comfort differ between users. Rental binoculars may be requested in advance but remain subject to availability.

3. Is a specialist ornithologist included?

The standard package includes an experienced safari driver-guide with birding knowledge. A dedicated specialist bird guide or ornithologist may be added at extra cost when available.

4. Can beginner birdwatchers join?

Yes. Our guide can explain identification using size, shape, colour, calls, flight pattern, behaviour and habitat. The programme can accommodate beginners, experienced birders and couples with mixed wildlife interests.

5. How many bird species will we see?

No fixed total can be guaranteed. The result depends on travel season, weather, water conditions, observation time, guide experience and natural bird movement. The goal is careful and rewarding observation rather than an unrealistic promised number.

6. Will we also see mammals?

Yes. Although birdwatching is the main theme, elephants, reticulated giraffes, Grevy’s zebras, gerenuks, Beisa oryx and predators may be encountered along the birding routes.

7. Can the tour focus on bird photography?

Yes. The private vehicle provides flexibility for long lenses and patient observation. A beanbag or monopod is normally more practical than a full tripod inside the safari vehicle.

8. Can bird calls be recorded?

Calls may be recorded from safe and authorised areas. Playback should be limited and used responsibly because repeated calls can disturb nesting, feeding or territorial birds.

9. What should birdwatchers wear?

Quiet, neutral-coloured clothing, closed shoes, a hat and sun protection are recommended. A light morning layer is useful, while a scarf and equipment cover can help during dry and dusty conditions.

10. Can the birding tour be extended?

Yes. You can add Buffalo Springs, Shaba, Ol Pejeta, Lake Baringo, Lake Nakuru, Kakamega Forest or another birding destination. A longer itinerary increases habitat diversity and potential species variety.
