Our 3-Day Premium Samburu Northern Frontier Drive turns the road journey from Nairobi into an important part of your safari experience. You will travel approximately 320 kilometres through central Kenya toward Isiolo and the Samburu ecosystem, with the transfer normally taking six to seven hours depending on traffic, road conditions and scheduled stops. After arriving at your premium lodge or luxury tented camp, you will enjoy an afternoon game drive, followed by separate morning and afternoon safaris on Day 2 and a final wildlife drive before returning to Nairobi. Our guide will explore dry bushland, riverine woodland, rocky hills and open plains while searching for elephants, lions, leopards, Grevy’s zebras, reticulated giraffes, gerenuks, Beisa oryx, Somali ostriches and colourful birds. Northern Kenya Departure
At approximately 5:30 AM in Nairobi, our driver-guide will collect you from your hotel, residence or agreed meeting point. You will begin the 320-kilometre road journey toward Samburu, with breakfast, comfort and refreshment stops arranged along the central Kenya route.
Premium Lodge Arrival
At around 12:30–1:30 PM in the Samburu area, you will arrive at your premium lodge or luxury tented camp and enjoy lunch. The early afternoon allows time to check in, freshen up and prepare binoculars and cameras for the first game drive.
First Samburu Wildlife Drive
From approximately 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM inside Samburu National Reserve, our guide will explore riverine woodland and open dryland habitats. You will search for elephants, reticulated giraffes, Grevy’s zebras, gerenuks and possible predators before returning for dinner.
Sunrise River Safari
At around 6:00 AM inside Samburu National Reserve, you will begin a morning game drive near the Ewaso Nyiro River and surrounding bushland. Wildlife may be active during the cooler hours, providing opportunities to observe elephants, big cats and rare northern species.
Lodge Breakfast and Leisure
At approximately 9:00 AM at your premium accommodation, you will return for breakfast and enjoy a relaxed midday break. Lunch, personal leisure and time to organise photography equipment will be included before the second safari.
Afternoon Dryland Exploration
From around 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM inside the reserve, our guide will explore a different wildlife area. You may encounter Grevy’s zebras, reticulated giraffes, Beisa oryx, Somali ostriches and elephants moving through the warm evening landscape.
Final Northern Wildlife Drive
At approximately 6:00 AM inside Samburu National Reserve, you will enjoy a final morning safari through productive wildlife areas. Our guide will search for animals not yet observed while allowing time for significant elephant or predator encounters.
Breakfast and Lodge Check-Out
At around 9:00 AM at your premium lodge, you will return for breakfast, freshen up and organise your luggage. Check-out will normally be completed at approximately 10:00 AM.
Scenic Return to Nairobi
From around 10:00 AM, you will travel approximately 320 kilometres back to Nairobi in six to seven hours. A lunch and comfort stop will be arranged before drop-off at your confirmed destination.

1. What makes this a northern frontier drive?
The package gives special attention to the changing landscapes between Nairobi and Samburu. You will pass through central Kenya toward the drier northern region, observing changes in farming, vegetation, settlement and terrain before reaching the reserve.
2. How long is the road journey?
The drive usually takes six to seven hours in each direction. The exact duration depends on the Nairobi pickup location, traffic, road conditions, lodge location and the number of meal or comfort stops.
3. Is the safari vehicle private?
Yes. The package is organised with a private safari vehicle unless your final confirmation states otherwise. Private transportation allows more flexibility with breaks, luggage, photography and game-drive pacing.
4. Is the long journey comfortable?
The route includes breakfast, refreshment and comfort stops at suitable facilities. Travelling in a private vehicle also allows reasonable adjustments when guests need a short additional break.
5. What wildlife can we expect in Samburu?
Possible sightings include elephants, lions, leopards, Grevy’s zebras, reticulated giraffes, gerenuks, Beisa oryx, Somali ostriches, buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, hyenas and many birds.
6. Are the Samburu Special Five guaranteed?
No. Samburu provides good opportunities to search for the Special Five, but the animals move freely. Their location depends on water, vegetation, weather and natural movement.
7. Why are Day 2 game drives separated?
Samburu is often warm during the middle of the day. Morning and afternoon drives allow you to explore during productive wildlife periods while enjoying breakfast, lunch and rest at the lodge.
8. Are meals included?
Meals are included according to the confirmed accommodation plan. The standard arrangement normally provides lunch and dinner on Day 1, breakfast, lunch and dinner on Day 2, and breakfast on Day 3.
9. Can the safari begin or end at the airport?
Yes, when the flight schedule provides sufficient time for immigration, luggage collection, road travel or airline check-in. Flight details must be provided before confirmation.
10. Can we continue to another reserve?
Yes. The safari may continue to Buffalo Springs, Shaba, Ol Pejeta, Lake Nakuru or Masai Mara. Additional travel time, accommodation and reserve fees will apply.
