Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu – Family Afternoon Game Drive

Nairobi to Samburu – Family Afternoon Game Drive

Our guide will collect your family from your Nairobi hotel or another agreed location for the drive-in journey to Samburu National Reserve. You will travel approximately 320–350 km in about 6–7 hours, although family rest stops may extend the journey slightly. The route passes through fertile highland farmland, scenic countryside and dry northern scrub before reaching Samburu’s acacia woodland and open savannah. After lunch and check-in at your midrange family-friendly lodge or tented camp, our safari continues with a relaxed 2–3-hour afternoon game drive. You will search for elephants, Grevy’s zebras, reticulated giraffes, gerenuks and other wildlife before returning for dinner and overnight.

Private Family Game Drives in Samburu

You will begin with a 3–4-hour morning game drive through dry grassland, thorny acacia bush, rocky outcrops and the riverine vegetation surrounding the Ewaso Ng’iro River. Our guide will introduce your family to animal behaviour and help children identify the Samburu Special Five while maintaining a comfortable safari pace. After breakfast, lunch and rest at the lodge, you will enjoy another approximately 3-hour afternoon game drive through doum-palm groves and open savannah. The two drives may cover approximately 50–80 km, depending on wildlife locations, track conditions and the family’s preferred pace.

Family Morning Safari – Drive Back to Nairobi

After an early breakfast or morning refreshments, our guide will take your family on a final 2–3-hour game drive covering approximately 20–35 km through acacia woodland, dry bushland and riverine forest. You will have another opportunity to see elephants, giraffes, antelopes, predators and colourful birds before leaving the reserve. Our drive-out journey covers approximately 320–350 km and normally takes 6–7 hours, passing from Samburu’s semi-arid vegetation into the greener highlands and cultivated countryside.
