Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu – Afternoon Birdwatching Drive

Nairobi to Samburu – Afternoon Birdwatching Drive

Our guide will collect you from Nairobi and begin the approximately 320–350 km drive to Samburu National Reserve, a journey of about 6–7 hours. You will travel through highland farmland, roadside woodland and increasingly dry northern scrub, with opportunities to observe raptors and open-country birds during safe scheduled stops. After checking into your midrange lodge or tented camp, our safari continues with a 2–3-hour afternoon birdwatching drive through acacia woodland, dry grassland and thorn bush. Our guide will help you look for hornbills, starlings, bee-eaters, eagles, vultures and vulturine guineafowl while also watching for the Samburu Special Five.

Full Day Samburu Birdwatching Experience

You will begin with a 3–4-hour morning birdwatching drive when temperatures are cooler and bird activity is generally higher. Our guide will explore dry savannah, rocky outcrops, acacia woodland and riverine forest while looking for Somali bee-eaters, pygmy falcons, mousebirds, bustards, kingfishers and other northern species. After returning to the lodge for breakfast and lunch, you will join another 3-hour afternoon drive around doum-palm groves and the Ewaso Ng’iro River. Approximately 50–80 km may be covered across the two drives, but the exact distance will depend on bird activity and habitat conditions.

Final Samburu Birding Drive – Return to Nairobi

Your final birdwatching safari begins early with a 2–3-hour drive covering approximately 20–35 km through open grassland, acacia bush and riverine vegetation. Our guide will revisit productive habitats and help you look for species that may have been missed during the previous day, while elephants, giraffes, zebras and predators may also appear. After breakfast, you will travel approximately 320–350 km back to Nairobi in about 6–7 hours, moving from Samburu’s dry thorn scrub through the greener highlands and cultivated countryside.
