Experience a 3-Day Samburu Special Five Luxury Safari with private game drives, rare northern wildlife, elephants and premium accommodation.
Venture into the rugged wilderness of northern Kenya on this 3-Day Samburu Special Five Luxury Safari from Nairobi. The itinerary is built around opportunities to encounter Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich—the distinctive animals known collectively as the Samburu Special Five. You will also search for elephant herds, lions, leopards, buffaloes, hyenas and abundant birdlife around the Ewaso Ng’iro River and surrounding dry-country habitats. A private safari vehicle and experienced driver-guide provide flexibility during the afternoon, morning and late-day game drives. Your luxury lodge or tented camp will offer premium comfort, quality meals and a peaceful wilderness atmosphere between wildlife activities. Samburu’s Special Five are species strongly associated with northern Kenya’s semi-arid areas. (Samburu National Reserve)
Driving distance: Approximately 310–325 km
Travel expectation: Around 5–6 hours, subject to traffic and road conditions
Wildlife targets: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, elephants and riverine animals
Our safari driver-guide will collect you from Nairobi and travel north toward Samburu National Reserve. As the environment changes from highland farmland to dry bushland, you will enter the natural range of several rare northern species. Following arrival, lunch and check-in at your luxury lodge or tented camp, you will begin an afternoon game drive. The guide will introduce the characteristics of the Samburu Special Five while searching for Grevy’s zebras, reticulated giraffes, gerenuks, Beisa oryx and Somali ostriches. You may also see elephants, lions, antelopes and birds before returning for dinner.
Daily reserve route: Flexible, often 45–75 km across both drives
Viewing period: Approximately 6–7 hours divided into two sessions
Primary attractions: All Samburu Special Five species, elephants, big cats, buffaloes and Ewaso Ng’iro River wildlife
Your morning game drive will explore open scrub and plains where rare northern animals may be feeding. The guide will identify the differences between Grevy’s and plains zebras, explain the gerenuk’s distinctive feeding behaviour and point out the markings of reticulated giraffes. After returning to the lodge for breakfast and a midday rest, you will head out again in the afternoon. The second drive may focus on the river, where elephants and other animals often gather, as well as areas known for predators. Because wildlife movement changes daily, the route will remain flexible and responsive to current sightings.
Game-drive section: Approximately 15–30 km
Return road: Approximately 310–325 km
Estimated time: Around 2–3 hours of wildlife viewing and 5–6 hours to Nairobi
Final targets: Any missing Special Five species, elephants, predators and sunrise landscapes
Your final drive provides another opportunity to complete your Samburu Special Five sightings or revisit a favourite wildlife area. The guide will use recent tracks, animal calls and information from other professional guides to plan the route. After the morning experience, you will return to the lodge for breakfast and check out. You will then travel to Nairobi, stopping for lunch or refreshments before final drop-off.
