Witness the Great Migration with our 3-Day Serengeti Migration drive in fly out safari. Drive to the North for river crossings and fly back for total comfort.
This safari offers a comprehensive journey through the heart of Tanzania's wild landscapes. You will drive from Arusha through the scenic highlands to reach the Northern Serengeti where the Great Migration herds congregate. After two days of intense wildlife viewing and searching for river crossings, you will save significant time by flying back to Arusha or Zanzibar from a bush airstrip. This package is perfect for travelers who enjoy seeing the changing countryside by road but prefer a quick return to their next destination.
Your safari begins very early in the morning as your guide picks you up from your hotel in Arusha. The journey to the Northern Serengeti is a long but beautiful drive of about 8 hours, covering approximately 350 kilometers. You will travel through the lush Ngorongoro Conservation Area highlands, where you might see Maasai people living alongside wildlife. Upon entering the Serengeti, you will head toward the Kogatende region for a half-day game drive. This area is famous for the Mara River, where the wildebeest herds gather for their dangerous crossings. A positive moment you might experience is seeing a massive herd of thousands of animals suddenly decide to move as one toward the water. You will reach your camp in the evening for dinner and a rest.

This journey takes about 4 to 5 hours through the Togoro and Lobo areas, which are known for high cheetah and lion activity. The landscape shifts from rocky hills to the classic open savannah. An unexpected moment for many travelers is spotting a leopard hiding in the branches of a sausage tree right next to the main track. You will board a small bush plane for your flight back to Arusha or Zanzibar, which takes about 1 to 2 hours. A memorable moment often happens at the airstrip itself, where you might see zebras or gazelles grazing peacefully right next to the runway as your plane prepares for takeoff.

What is the advantage of a 3-Day Serengeti Migration drive in fly out safari?
The main advantage is experiencing both the terrestrial beauty of the land and the convenience of a flight. You get to see the diverse landscapes of the Ngorongoro highlands during the drive in and then save nearly ten hours of road travel by flying out. This balance allows you to maximize your time with the animals in the Northern Serengeti without feeling exhausted by the return trip.
Can I see the Mara River crossing during this 3-day migration safari?
Yes, this itinerary specifically targets the Northern Serengeti where the Mara River crossings occur from July to October. While these crossings are natural events that cannot be strictly scheduled, our guides are experts at positioning the vehicle in the best spots. Spending a full day in the area increases your chances of seeing thousands of wildebeest plunge into the water.
How long is the drive from Arusha to the Northern Serengeti on the first day?
The drive is quite long, typically taking between 8 and 10 hours depending on the weather and road conditions. It covers over 400 kilometers of varied terrain, including paved roads and rough dirt tracks within the park. We provide a comfortable 4x4 vehicle with plenty of water and snacks to ensure the journey is as pleasant as possible.
What is the luggage limit for the fly out portion of the safari?
Small bush planes have strict weight limits for safety reasons, usually capped at 15 kilograms per person. It is important to use soft-sided bags rather than hard suitcases because they fit more easily into the small cargo pods. If you have extra luggage, we can often arrange for it to be stored in Arusha and delivered to you later.
Is the flight from the Serengeti to Zanzibar or Arusha included in the price?
Typically, the domestic flight from the Kogatende airstrip to your next destination is factored into the package cost. You can choose to fly back to Arusha for your international departure or head straight to the beaches of Zanzibar. We handle all the flight logistics so you can simply enjoy your final morning game drive.
What kind of animals will I see on this 3-day migration safari in Serengeti Migration?
Beyond the millions of wildebeest and zebras, you are likely to see the Big Five which includes lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and potentially rhinos. The Northern Serengeti is also famous for its high concentration of crocodiles in the river and hippos in the pools. Bird watchers will also be delighted by the hundreds of species found in the acacia woodlands.
Are there bathroom facilities available during the long drive on day one?
Yes, there are designated picnic sites and park gates with clean restroom facilities along the route. Your guide will plan regular stops so you can stretch your legs and use the facilities. While in the deep wilderness, the guide can also find safe spots for a bush toilet stop if necessary.
Is this 3-day safari in Serengeti Migration suitable for solo travelers?
Solo travelers can definitely join this tour, though it is often more cost-effective to join a group or pay a single supplement. It is a safe and well-organized way to see the migration with a professional guide by your side at all times. You will have plenty of opportunities to meet other travelers at the lodges and camps in the evenings.
What happens if my flight out of the Serengeti is delayed?
Flights in the bush can occasionally be delayed by weather or small operational changes, but the bush pilots are very experienced. Our team remains in contact with the airstrip staff to keep you informed of any timing updates. If a delay happens, you can usually spend a little more time game viewing near the airstrip.
What should I wear for the morning game drive on the final day?
Early mornings in the Serengeti can be surprisingly chilly, even during the warmer months. We recommend wearing layers, such as a t-shirt with a fleece or light jacket on top that you can remove as the sun gets higher. Neutral colors like tan, grey, or green are best to avoid attracting insects and to blend in with the environment.
