Arusha Fly to Northern Serengeti

The day begins with a transfer to Arusha Airport for your morning flight to the Northern Serengeti. The flight takes approximately 1.5 hours, offering a bird’s-eye view of the volcanic highlands and the vast plains below. After landing at Kogatende Airstrip, your guide will pick you up in a 4x4 safari vehicle for a half-day game drive. You will visit the banks of the Mara River where the migration herds gather. You might witness the dramatic tension as thousands of wildebeest hesitate at the water's edge before making a frantic crossing. This route takes you through different ecosystems, from the rolling hills of the north to the iconic flat savannah of the center. As you travel, you will follow the path of the herds, seeing endless lines of wildebeest and zebras. A positive and unexpected moment could be coming across a cheetah coalition hunting in the open plains near the Togoro area. You will reach the Seronera Valley by late afternoon for dinner and rest.

The final day focuses on the "Big Five" during a morning game drive in the Central Serengeti. This area is famous for its high concentration of lions and leopards that live year-round near the Seronera River. You will spend about 3 to 4 hours exploring the river loops and rocky outcrops. It is quite common to see a pride of lions lounging on the road or even a rhino in the distance if luck is on your side. After a bush lunch, your guide will drive you to the Seronera Airstrip for your flight back to Arusha or onward to Zanzibar. A memorable moment often occurs right at the airstrip, where giraffes or zebras sometimes wander onto the runway, causing a brief and exciting delay for the plane.

RELATED FAQS ABOUT 3 Days Serengeti Migration Fly-in Fly-out Safari

What is the best time for a 3-day migration safari in Serengeti to see river crossings?

The most popular time to see the wildebeest cross the Mara River is between July and October. During these months, the herds are concentrated in the north, making it easier to see the action on a short trip. Your flight will land at Kogatende to put you right in the middle of the crossing zones.

How much luggage can I bring on the bush plane for this safari?

Internal flights to the Serengeti have a strict luggage limit of 15kg per person, including carry-on bags. You must use soft-sided bags because the cargo pods on small planes cannot fit hard suitcases. If you have extra luggage, most hotels in Arusha offer secure storage while you are in the bush.

Will I see the Big Five on this 3-Day Serengeti Migration fly in fly out safari?

While the focus is on the wildebeest herds, the Central Serengeti is one of the best places to see lions, leopards, elephants, and buffaloes. Rhinos are the rarest, but your guide will work hard to locate them in specific areas of the park. Most guests see at least four of the Big Five within these three days.

Is it possible to customize the 3-day Serengeti Migration safari to start from Zanzibar?

Yes, you can easily start this package from Zanzibar instead of Arusha. There are daily flights that connect the island directly to the Serengeti airstrips in the morning. This is a great way to combine a beach holiday with a quick but intense wildlife viewing experience.

What kind of vehicles are used for the game drives?

You will use a 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof designed specifically for photography and wildlife viewing. Each vehicle is equipped with a radio for communication between guides to help locate the migration herds quickly. There are also charging ports for your cameras and phones during the drive

Are meals included in the package?

All meals are included starting from lunch on the first day to lunch on the third day. You will have hot dinners at the camps and picnic lunches during the game drives to maximize your time with the animals. Bottled water is also provided throughout the journey in the vehicle.

How close do we get to the Great Migration herds?

Your guide will drive as close as legally allowed by park regulations, which is often just a few meters from the herds. During river crossings, the vehicle stays at a distance to avoid spooking the animals before they enter the water. This ensures you get excellent photos without disturbing the natural behavior of the wildlife.

What should I pack for a 3-day migration safari in Serengeti?

You should pack light, breathable clothing in neutral colors like khaki or olive. A warm jacket is necessary for early morning drives and evenings when temperatures drop. Do not forget binoculars, a good camera with a zoom lens, and high-factor sunscreen.

Can I add a hot air balloon flight to this itinerary?

A hot air balloon safari can be added on the morning of Day 2 or Day 3. This activity starts at dawn and offers a unique perspective of the migration from above the plains. It usually concludes with a champagne breakfast in the bush before you continue with your regular game drive.

Is there mobile network or Wi-Fi in the Serengeti?

Most luxury and mid-range camps offer Wi-Fi in the common lounge areas, though the speed can be slow. Mobile network coverage is available in some parts of the park but can be spotty in the remote northern areas. This trip is a great opportunity to disconnect and enjoy the natural environment.
