Where can I legally do a night game drive in Tanzania?
Night drives are prohibited inside the main Serengeti but are allowed in Lake Manyara National Park, Tarangire (in private concessions/WMAs), and private reserves bordering the Serengeti like Grumeti or Ikorongo.
What animals will I see at night that I won't see during the day?
You'll seek out "The Elusive Five": leopards (highly active at night), genets, civet cats, porcupines, and honey badgers. You’ll also see hippos grazing on land and "bush babies" jumping through the trees.
Is it safe to be in an open vehicle at night?
yes. Night drives are led by highly trained professional guides and often accompanied by an armed ranger. The vehicles use specialized spotlights with red filters to minimize animal stress while ensuring guest safety.
How long does a night game drive last?
Typically, a night safari lasts between 2 and 3 hours. It usually begins after an early dinner (around 8:00 PM) and returns to the lodge by 11:00 PM.
Will I be able to take photos in the dark?
Photography is challenging. While the guides use spotlights, flash photography is often prohibited to protect the animals' eyes. High-ISO settings and "night mode" on modern cameras are recommended.
What should I wear?
The temperature in the African bush drops significantly after sunset. You should wear layers, including a warm fleece or windbreaker, long trousers, and closed-toe shoes.
Are children allowed on night game drives?
Many luxury lodges have age restrictions (usually 12 years and older) for night drives due to the silence and patience required, though some private concessions are more flexible.
Do I need a special permit?
Yes, but this is handled by your safari operator. Night drives in National Parks like Lake Manyara require a pre-booked TANAPA permit and a park-authorized ranger.
Does the spotlight hurt the animals' eyes?
Ethical operators use filtered lights (often red) that do not blind or dazzle the animals. Guides are trained never to shine lights directly into an animal’s eyes for extended periods.
Why choose a 3-day itinerary for this?
A 3-day trip is perfect for focusing on one or two specific parks (like serengeti and ngorongoro) that specialize in night activities, allowing you to maximize your nocturnal sightings without the fatigue of a longer trip.
