Why choose an open vehicle over a standard pop-up roof vehicle?
Open-sided vehicles provide a 360-degree unobstructed view, which is superior for photography and feeling "at one" with the environment. You don't have to stand up to see out; the wildlife is visible from your seat.
Is it safe to be in an open vehicle near predators?
Yes. Predators generally perceive the vehicle and its passengers as a single, large object that is not a source of food. As long as you remain seated and quiet, animals like lions and leopards remain indifferent to your presence.
Are open vehicles allowed on public roads?
Generally, no. Open vehicles are restricted to the interiors of national parks and private concessions. For this reason, a 3-day luxury trip usually involves flying into a bush airstrip where the lodge’s open vehicle is waiting for you.
Will I get dusty or wet in an open vehicle?
Open vehicles offer less protection from the elements. However, luxury operators provide high-quality ponchos for rain and soft blankets for chilly morning drives. Some even provide goggles or "buffs" to protect you from dust.
Is there any protection from the sun?
Most luxury open vehicles are equipped with a heavy-duty canvas canopy or roof to provide constant shade while keeping the sides completely open for viewing.
Can I charge my camera in an open vehicle?
Yes. Modern luxury safari cruisers are outfitted with internal power inverters and USB ports, allowing you to charge your devices while tracking wildlife.
Are these vehicles private?
In a "Luxury" package, you can often book a private vehicle. Otherwise, game drives are shared with a maximum of 4 to 6 guests, ensuring everyone has an "outside" seat with a clear view.
Which parks are best for open-vehicle safaris?
The Serengeti, Tarangire, and Nyerere (Selous) are ideal. Because the Ngorongoro Crater has strict regulations, many lodges there use closed vehicles for the descent but may offer open vehicles for rim-side activities.
Are there age restrictions for children?
Some lodges have a minimum age (often 6 or 12 years) for shared open-vehicle game drives to ensure safety and silence. Private vehicle bookings usually waive these restrictions.
Do I need special gear?
Eye protection (sunglasses) and a hat with a chin strap (to prevent it from blowing off) are essential. We also recommend a "dust cover" for your camera lens when not in use.
