Join a 4-day Kenya midrange birdwatching safari from Nairobi to Maasai Mara and Lake Nakuru, exploring diverse bird habitats and wildlife.
Explore Kenya’s varied bird habitats on this 4-Day Kenya Midrange Birdwatching Safari from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara and Lake Nakuru. This experience is designed for bird lovers who want to observe raptors, waterbirds, grassland species, woodland birds and other wildlife without selecting an expensive specialist tour. Your safari includes an introductory afternoon drive, a full birdwatching day in the Maasai Mara and an early morning session at Lake Nakuru. Our guide will allow time for species identification, photography and bird-list recording while also including important mammal sightings. Comfortable midrange accommodation provides the rest and practical facilities needed after long hours in the field.
Our Kenya birdwatching safari begins with an approximately 270-kilometre drive from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara, taking around 5½ to 6½ hours. Along the route, you will pass through urban edges, Great Rift Valley escarpment, agricultural highlands, open farmland and savannah habitat where roadside bird observations may begin. After lunch and check-in at your midrange accommodation, you will enjoy an afternoon birdwatching and wildlife drive lasting approximately 2½ to 3 hours and covering around 25 to 45 kilometres. Our guide will explore grassland, scattered acacia bush and seasonal wet areas while searching for raptors, ground birds, storks, lapwings, rollers, larks and other species.
After an early breakfast, you will leave with binoculars, cameras, field guides and packed lunch for a birdwatching safari lasting approximately 8 to 10 hours and covering around 70 to 110 kilometres. Our guide will move through open grasslands, riverine forest, marshes, acacia woodland and seasonal streams to increase the variety of species encountered. You may search for vultures, eagles, bustards, secretary birds, hornbills, bee-eaters, rollers and many smaller species while also enjoying mammals found along the route. The slower birdwatching pace will allow you to observe plumage, flight patterns, feeding behaviour and habitat preferences before returning to the lodge in the evening.
Your birdwatching journey will continue with an approximately 260-kilometre transfer from the Maasai Mara to Lake Nakuru, taking around 5½ to 6½ hours. The route passes through pastoral savannah, agricultural areas, highland woodland, roadside wetlands and Rift Valley settlements, creating opportunities to notice species that differ from those inside the reserve. Our guide will make safe birding and comfort stops where practical. After arriving near Lake Nakuru, you will check into your midrange accommodation, update your bird list, charge your equipment and discuss possible target species for the final morning.
You will enter Lake Nakuru National Park for a birdwatching drive lasting approximately 3 to 4 hours and covering around 35 to 60 kilometres. The park’s habitat includes alkaline shoreline, shallow water sections, fever-tree woodland, grassland, rocky escarpment and dense bush, supporting waterbirds and terrestrial species. Depending on seasonal conditions, your safari may encounter pelicans, flamingos, herons, egrets, fish eagles, cormorants, storks and woodland birds, together with rhinos and other mammals. You will then leave Nakuru and travel approximately 160 kilometres to Nairobi, a road journey of about 3 to 4 hours.
