4 Days Luxury Samburu

Road to the North

Your guide will meet the family at JKIA or a Nairobi hotel between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. The 310–330 km journey normally requires 5½–6½ hours, excluding comfort and refreshment stops. Travel through central Kenya's farming highlands, pass the Mount Kenya region and continue through Isiolo towards Samburu. Stops can be adjusted for children or senior family members while maintaining a safe arrival plan.

Family's First Game Drive

Arrive around 1:00 p.m. for lunch and check-in at a premium family-friendly lodge or camp. Rest until about 3:30 p.m., then begin a three-hour game drive. The guide will introduce the Ewaso Ng'iro River ecosystem and help children identify elephants, antelopes, giraffes and birds through clear explanations. Return around sunset for dinner and overnight; families may request an earlier return if younger travellers become tired.

Tracks and Animal Signs

Begin at approximately 6:30 a.m. with a relaxed 2½-hour drive. Children can learn how guides use tracks, feeding signs, alarm calls and habitat knowledge to locate wildlife. Search responsibly for Samburu's distinctive species while keeping a safe distance from every animal. Return for breakfast around 9:15 a.m.

Time at the Lodge

The middle of the day is intentionally unhurried. Families can use the pool where available, rest in their rooms or join lodge activities permitted for their children's ages. Lunch is usually served around 1:00 p.m., followed by another break. Adults must supervise children at all times, especially in an unfenced property.

Afternoon Exploration

Leave at about 3:30 p.m. for a second game drive through riverine forest, acacia country and open plains. The guide can help the family maintain a simple wildlife checklist and answer conservation questions. Return around 6:30 p.m. for dinner and overnight.

One More Samburu Adventure

Enjoy a final drive from approximately 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. The route will respond to recent wildlife movement and the family's interests. Return for breakfast and check out around 9:30 a.m. The guide will assist with luggage and ensure that car seats or mobility items are correctly secured before departure.

Ol Pejeta Introduction

Samburu to Ol Pejeta covers 130–160 km and normally takes three to four hours. Arrive for a late lunch and check in at the selected premium accommodation. During an afternoon drive, learn how Ol Pejeta protects wildlife across the Laikipia landscape. Search for rhinos, zebras, buffaloes, elephants and antelopes without expecting guaranteed sightings. Reach camp before dark for dinner and overnight.

Learning from Conservation

Breakfast is served at approximately 6:30 a.m. After check-out, begin a final game drive and visit the northern white rhino area when accessible. Continue to Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary during the public morning session. Children can learn why rescued chimpanzees need specialist care and why chimpanzees are not native to Kenya. Adults must supervise children and follow sanctuary instructions.

Lunch and Nairobi Drop-Off

Have lunch at approximately 12:30–1:00 p.m. The 210–230 km drive to Nairobi generally takes four to five hours, with a comfort stop when needed. Arrival is expected between 5:30 and 7:00 p.m. Drop-off can be arranged at JKIA, a Nairobi hotel or an agreed residence. Families flying internationally should book after 9:00 p.m. or spend the night in Nairobi.
