Nairobi to Maasai Mara – Introductory Birdwatching Drive

Our birdwatching safari begins with an approximately 270-kilometre journey from Nairobi to Maasai Mara, taking around 5½ to 6½ hours. The route passes through urban outskirts, Rift Valley escarpment, highland farms, roadside wetlands, pastoral land and open savannah, giving you opportunities to notice common roadside species. After lunch and check-in, you will enjoy a 2½ to 3-hour birding drive covering approximately 25 to 40 kilometres. Our guide will explore open grassland, acacia bush and seasonal wet areas while helping you identify raptors, lapwings, rollers, storks, larks and other birds.

Day 2: Full-Day Maasai Mara Grassland and Riverine Birding

Full-Day Maasai Mara Grassland and Riverine Birding

After an early breakfast, you will carry binoculars, cameras and packed lunch for an 8 to 10-hour birdwatching safari covering approximately 70 to 110 kilometres. Our guide will explore grasslands, riverine woodland, marshes, acacia savannah and seasonal streams to increase species variety. You may search for vultures, eagles, secretary birds, bustards, bee-eaters, hornbills and numerous smaller birds. Mammals encountered along the route will also be enjoyed, creating a complete natural-history experience.

Day 3: Second Full-Day Maasai Mara Habitat Exploration

Second Full-Day Maasai Mara Habitat Exploration

Your second birdwatching day will last approximately 8 to 10 hours and may cover around 65 to 100 kilometres through different sections of the reserve. Our guide will focus on habitats not explored extensively the previous day, such as wooded riverbanks, rocky areas, short-grass plains and marshy zones. You will have more time to search for missed species, improve photographs and observe feeding, nesting or hunting behaviour. A picnic lunch will be served inside the reserve before continuing the afternoon birding session.

Maasai Mara to Nairobi – Final Roadside Birding Journey

Following breakfast, you will leave Maasai Mara and travel approximately 270 kilometres to Nairobi, taking around 5½ to 6½ hours. The route crosses savannah, pastoral zones, cultivated highlands and Rift Valley scenery. Safe roadside bird observations may be included when practical, although the main purpose of the day is the return transfer. Your birdwatching safari ends with drop-off at your agreed Nairobi location.
