Nairobi to Maasai Mara – Scenic Overland Journey and Afternoon Safari

Your Kenya road safari begins when our guide collects you from your Nairobi hotel, airport or agreed meeting point. You will travel approximately 270 kilometres to Maasai Mara, with the journey taking around 5½ to 6½ hours depending on traffic, weather and road conditions. The route crosses Nairobi’s outer suburbs, the Great Rift Valley escarpment, cultivated highlands, small towns, livestock areas and open savannah. Our guide will include suitable stops for photographs, refreshments and washroom breaks. After arriving at your midrange lodge or tented camp, you will enjoy lunch and begin an afternoon game drive lasting about 2½ to 3 hours and covering approximately 25 to 45 kilometres through open grassland, scattered acacia woodland and seasonal drainage zones.

Your guide will select routes based on recent wildlife movement while searching for lions, cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras and antelopes. You will have time to observe animal behaviour and photograph the landscape before stopping for lunch at an approved picnic area. Day 3: Second Full-Day Mara Road Adventure and Wildlife Search

Second Full-Day Mara Road Adventure and Wildlife Search

Your second full day gives you another 8 to 10 hours in the Maasai Mara and may cover approximately 70 to 110 kilometres, depending on wildlife locations and track conditions. Our guide will aim to explore areas not covered extensively on Day 2, including short-grass plains, wooded river corridors, rocky outcrops, marshland and open grazing zones. This additional day improves your chances of experiencing different animal interactions and quieter sections of the reserve. You will enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by natural scenery before continuing your road safari until the late afternoon.

Day 4: Maasai Mara to Nairobi – Return through the Great Rift Valley

Maasai Mara to Nairobi – Return through the Great Rift Valley

After breakfast, you will leave the Maasai Mara region and begin the approximately 270-kilometre return journey to Nairobi, which normally takes around 5½ to 6½ hours. The habitat changes from open grassland and pastoral country to highland farms, Rift Valley escarpments, roadside settlements and urban surroundings. Our guide will make suitable comfort and refreshment stops along the way. Depending on the lodge location and departure time, a brief morning wildlife-viewing opportunity may be possible before starting the road transfer. Your safari ends with drop-off at your hotel, airport or agreed location in Nairobi.

RELATED FAQS ABOUT 4 Days Nairobi to Maasai Mara Scenic Road Safari with Midrange Lodges

    1. Is this package entirely operated by road?

Yes. The package starts and ends in Nairobi using a safari vehicle without domestic flights.

    2. Why choose a road safari instead of flying?

A road safari allows you to see Kenya’s countryside, Rift Valley scenery, towns and changing landscapes along the route.

    3. What type of vehicle is used?

A customised safari van or 4x4 vehicle with an opening roof and large viewing windows may be used.

    4. Are all the roads paved?

The main highways are mostly paved, but reserve tracks and some access roads may be rough, muddy or dusty.

    5. Are comfort stops included?

Yes. Our guide will include reasonable washroom, refreshment and stretching stops during the transfers.

    6. Is the safari private or shared?

Both private and shared options may be offered. Your final quotation should clearly show the selected arrangement.

    7. Can we carry large suitcases?

Soft-sided luggage is recommended because it is easier to arrange inside a safari vehicle.

    8. Does rain affect the road safari?

Heavy rain may increase travel time and make some game-drive tracks difficult to access.

    9. Can Lake Naivasha be added?

Yes. An additional night at Lake Naivasha or another destination can be included with a revised itinerary.

    10. Are meals included on travel days?

Meal arrangements depend on the confirmed package and accommodation plan.
