Join a 4-day premium Maasai Mara and Lake Nakuru birding safari with raptors, waterbirds, rhinos, private drives and premium lodging.
Our 4-Day Premium Mara Skies & Lake Nakuru Wetland Quest combines savannah birdwatching with lakeshore and woodland habitats while maintaining a complete wildlife safari. You will travel privately from Nairobi to Maasai Mara for an afternoon birding drive and a full-day exploration of open plains, riverine woodland and seasonal wetlands. Possible sightings include raptors, vultures, cranes, storks, rollers, bustards and many smaller species, together with lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes and zebras. Day 3 continues through Narok to Lake Nakuru, where your final morning focuses on pelicans, cormorants, herons, kingfishers, raptors and seasonally variable flamingos. Rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes and buffaloes may also be encountered. A private vehicle supports patient identification, bird photography and checklist discussions.
Rift Valley Birding Journey
At approximately 5:15 AM in Nairobi, our guide will collect you and arrange your binoculars, cameras and field guides safely. You will travel through the Great Rift Valley toward Narok and Maasai Mara, with a breakfast or comfort stop along the route. Safely visible roadside birds may be discussed without delaying the journey.
Afternoon Savannah Birding
After lunch and check-in near the Maasai Mara, you will begin a birding game drive from approximately 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Our guide will search grasslands and woodland for raptors, bustards, rollers, storks, cranes and smaller savannah species. Larger wildlife may also be observed before returning for dinner.
Morning Grassland and Riverine Search
At around 6:00 AM, you will begin a full-day birding safari while many species are active. Our guide will explore open plains, woodland and riverine zones while allowing enough time for identification, photography and behavioural observation. Lions, elephants and giraffes may also appear along the route.
Checklist Lunch and Afternoon Birds
At approximately 12:30 PM, you will enjoy a picnic lunch and review the morning checklist using photographs or field guides. From around 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM, you will explore another habitat for raptors, vultures, ground birds and seasonal species. Dinner and overnight follow at your premium lodge.
Breakfast and Birding Departure
At approximately 6:30–7:00 AM, you will enjoy breakfast, organise equipment and complete lodge check-out. A short observation may be possible while leaving the Mara ecosystem, depending on the route and timing. The journey then continues toward Lake Nakuru through Narok and the Rift Valley.
Premium Nakuru Arrival
The transfer generally takes five and a half to seven hours depending on road conditions and stops. You will arrive in the Lake Nakuru area during the afternoon, check into your premium accommodation and enjoy lunch or refreshments. Lodge gardens may offer informal birdwatching before dinner.
Morning Wetland Birding
At around 6:00 AM, you will enter Lake Nakuru National Park for a focused birding and wildlife drive. Possible sightings include pelicans, cormorants, herons, kingfishers, fish eagles, vultures and seasonally variable flamingos. Rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes and buffaloes may also be encountered.
Breakfast and Final Checklist
At approximately 9:15 AM, you will return for breakfast and review the final species list. From around 10:30 AM, you will travel approximately 160 kilometres to Nairobi, normally taking three to four hours. Final drop-off will be arranged at your confirmed location.
