4 Days Premium Samburu

Changing Habitats

Pickup from JKIA or your Nairobi hotel is scheduled for approximately 6:30 a.m. Travel 310–330 km through Thika, Karatina, Nanyuki and Isiolo, allowing 5½–6½ hours of driving plus safe refreshment stops. Your guide may identify notable roadside birds without creating unsafe delays. As elevation and vegetation change, you will see the transition from cultivated central highlands to northern Kenya's dry bushland. Arrive around 1:00 p.m. for lunch and check-in.

First Birding Drive

Prepare binoculars and cameras before departing at about 3:30 p.m. for a three-hour birding and wildlife drive. Explore open scrub and the Ewaso Ng'iro River corridor while looking for hornbills, bee-eaters, rollers, starlings, guineafowl, kingfishers and raptors. Your guide will also interpret mammals encountered along the route. Return around 6:30 p.m. to update your checklist, enjoy dinner and overnight at a premium camp.

Cool-Hour Birding

Leave at approximately 6:15 a.m. when calls and feeding activity may be more noticeable. Search riverine vegetation for kingfishers, herons and woodland birds before moving into open country for larks, bustards, sandgrouse and raptors. Identification will rely on visible field marks and calls; uncertain records will be marked as provisional rather than added as confirmed species.

Midday Checklist

Return around 9:30 a.m. for breakfast. Use the quieter hours to compare photographs, consult field guides and discuss difficult identifications with your guide. Lunch is normally served at approximately 1:00 p.m., followed by rest at the premium lodge.

Alternative Habitats

The afternoon outing begins around 3:30 p.m. and uses different tracks until about 6:30 p.m. The guide will examine flowering trees, water points, river edges and open perches where activity may concentrate. Migratory species are more likely in relevant seasons, but rainfall and annual movement patterns influence every birding day

Samburu Farewell

Depart at about 6:15 a.m. for a final 2–2½-hour session focused on species not yet recorded. The guide may revisit productive riverine areas or explore open scrub according to the checklist. Return for breakfast, review the Samburu records and check out at approximately 9:30 a.m.

Birding Across Laikipia

Drive 130–160 km through Isiolo and Nanyuki to Ol Pejeta, normally taking three to four hours. After a late lunch, enter a landscape of grassland, acacia bush and seasonal wet areas. The afternoon drive may reveal different raptors, open-country birds and water-associated species together with rhinos and other mammals. Reach the premium camp before dark for dinner and overnight.

Grassland Birding

After breakfast at approximately 6:30 a.m., check out and begin a final drive through Ol Pejeta. Search grasslands, wet areas and acacia edges for raptors, storks, bustards and smaller birds. The route can include the northern white rhino area before reaching Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary during the public morning visiting period.

Final Checklist and Return

After the sanctuary, continue birding towards the exit and review the combined checklist with your guide. Lunch is served at approximately 12:30–1:00 p.m. Depart for Nairobi on the 210–230 km road journey, allowing four to five hours. Expected arrival is between 5:30 and 7:00 p.m., with drop-off at JKIA or an agreed Nairobi address. The final total will include only confidently identified birds.
