Highland Journey

Your private guide will collect you from JKIA or a Nairobi hotel at approximately 6:30–7:00 a.m. The 310–330 km drive via Thika, Karatina, Nanyuki and Isiolo normally takes 5½–6½ hours, excluding refreshment and photography stops. As fertile highlands give way to drier northern country, the guide will discuss camera protection, vehicle positioning and suitable settings. You should reach the Samburu area around 1:00 p.m. for check-in and lunch at your premium lodge or tented camp.

First Samburu Frames

After resting and preparing equipment, leave at about 3:30 p.m. for a three-hour game drive. Explore acacia scrub, open country and the Ewaso Ng'iro River corridor while searching responsibly for elephants, giraffes, antelopes, birds and predators. Soft afternoon light may support environmental portraits and landscape compositions. Your guide will avoid crowding animals and will reposition only where reserve rules allow. Return around 6:30 p.m. for dinner, image backup and overnight in Samburu.

Riverbank Photography

Depart around 6:15 a.m. with tea or coffee for a 2½–3-hour drive. Cooler conditions and low light can create strong photographic opportunities beside the river and across open tracks. The guide will look for animal behaviour, clean backgrounds and safe viewing angles while giving each subject sufficient space. Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich are among Samburu's distinctive species, but every encounter depends on natural movement.

Equipment and Lunch Break

Return around 9:15 a.m. for breakfast. The late morning is available for downloading images, charging batteries, cleaning equipment and enjoying the lodge. Lunch is normally served at approximately 1:00 p.m., followed by a quiet rest during the strongest midday light.

Evening Colours

Begin the second drive around 3:30 p.m. and explore different habitats until about 6:30 p.m. Depending on conditions, the route may concentrate on river crossings, open plains, shaded bush or elevated landscape views. The guide will allow patient observation without promising a particular species. Return for dinner and an unhurried review of the day's photographs.

Last Samburu Session

Start with a 6:15–8:30 a.m. game drive, revisiting productive habitats or searching a new sector based on the previous day's observations. This final session may focus on tracks, river activity, bird photography or wider landscape scenes. Return for breakfast and check out at approximately 9:30 a.m. Your guide will help secure camera bags and lenses before the transfer.

Across Northern Kenya

Samburu to Ol Pejeta covers 130–160 km and normally takes three to four hours through Isiolo and Nanyuki, depending on the accommodation and gates used. Arrive for a late lunch, then take an introductory drive across Ol Pejeta's grasslands and acacia country. Search for rhinos, buffaloes, elephants, zebras and antelopes while learning about conservation. Continue to your premium camp for dinner and overnight. A night drive may be booked separately, subject to availability.

Rhinos and Chimpanzees

Have breakfast at approximately 6:30 a.m., check out and begin the final wildlife drive. The programme may include the protected northern white rhino area when accessible, followed by Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary during the public morning session. Your guide will allow time for responsible photography and explain the conservation work. Chimpanzees choose where to remain within their large enclosures, so close views are not guaranteed.

Return to Nairobi

Lunch is planned at approximately 12:30–1:00 p.m. before leaving Laikipia. Ol Pejeta to Nairobi is 210–230 km and generally takes four to five hours, depending on the gate, traffic and final address. Expected arrival is between 5:30 and 7:00 p.m. Drop-off is available at JKIA, a Nairobi hotel or an agreed residence. International flights should preferably depart after 9:00 p.m.
