1. What makes June a unique month for a luxury safari in Tanzania?
June is a spectacular "bridge" month where the landscape transitions from the lush green of the rains to the golden hues of the dry season. It is specifically famous for the Western Corridor migration, where hundreds of thousands of wildebeest gather to cross the Grumeti River, providing some of the most dramatic wildlife action of the year.
2. How is the weather and temperature during June game drives?
June marks the start of the "cool and dry" season. Days are brilliantly clear and sunny with temperatures around 25°C, making for perfect photography light. However, early mornings can be quite cold, often dropping to 10°C, so our luxury vehicles are equipped with warm ponchos and hot coffee to keep you comfortable.
3. Can we see the Great Migration river crossings in June?
Yes! While the famous Mara River crossings happen later, June is the prime time for the Grumeti River crossings in the Western Serengeti. This is a more exclusive experience as there are fewer tourist vehicles in this region compared to the northern border later in the year.
4. Are there many mosquitoes or tsetse flies in June?
Because the humidity drops significantly in June, mosquito activity is very low. Tsetse flies can be present in some wooded areas, but our luxury 4x4 vehicles use specialized repellents and dark-colored interior accents to minimize any inconvenience to our guests.
5. Is June a good time for a fly-in luxury safari?
It is highly recommended. By June, all the bush airstrips are dry and fully operational. Flying directly into the Serengeti Western Corridor or the Seronera region saves you hours of driving and places you directly in the middle of the migrating herds.
6. What type of luxury accommodation is best for June?
We recommend a mix of permanent luxury lodges on the Ngorongoro Crater rim and high-end mobile "under canvas" camps in the Serengeti. These mobile camps follow the migration, ensuring you are always within minutes of the wildlife action while still enjoying king-sized beds and en-suite hot showers.
7. Is wildlife viewing in the Ngorongoro Crater good in June?
June is excellent for the Crater. Since the water sources on the crater floor are permanent, the wildlife density is staggering. The thinning vegetation also makes it much easier to spot the elusive Black Rhino and pride of lions camouflaged in the grass.
8. What should I pack specifically for a June safari?
You should pack "safari layers." A heavy fleece or light down jacket is essential for the 6:00 AM starts, but you will want light, breathable cotton or linen clothing for the midday heat. Neutral colors like khaki, olive, and tan are best to blend into the drying environment.
9. Are the parks very crowded in June?
June is the start of the high season, but it is generally less crowded than July and August. This "sweet spot" allows for a more private luxury experience where you can enjoy sightings for longer periods without the pressure of many other vehicles.
10. Do I need to book my June luxury safari far in advance?
Yes, June is one of the most sought-after months for connoisseurs of the migration. To secure the most exclusive lodges and the best private guides, we recommend booking at least 9 to 12 months in advance.
