Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu – First Special Five Wildlife Drive

Nairobi to Samburu – First Special Five Wildlife Drive

Our professional guide will collect you from Nairobi and drive approximately 310–325 kilometres to Samburu National Reserve, a journey normally taking five and a half to six and a half hours. The route passes through central Kenyan highlands and gradually changes into the drier northern landscape around Isiolo. After arriving at your luxury lodge or tented camp, you will enjoy lunch and begin an afternoon game drive. Attractions may include Grevy’s zebras, reticulated giraffes, gerenuks, elephants, lions and Somali ostriches, introducing you to the rare species and rugged scenery that distinguish Samburu from Kenya’s southern reserves.

Day 2: Morning and Afternoon Samburu Special Five Safari

Morning and Afternoon Samburu Special Five Safari

Your second day includes two game drives covering approximately 45–75 kilometres and around six to seven hours in total. The cooler morning will focus on open scrubland and river areas where elephants, giraffes and rare northern animals may be active. You will return to the lodge for breakfast, lunch and relaxation before beginning an afternoon drive through another section of the reserve. The guide will continue searching for all five northern species together with lions, leopards, buffaloes, hyenas and colourful birds. Routes will remain flexible because animal distribution changes with water, temperature and vegetation.

Depending on lodge location and the authorised exit route, you may enjoy final views of conservancy wildlife while departing. Luxury Accommodation and Serious Wildlife Viewing

    5/5

The lodges were comfortable and elegant, but the itinerary still prioritised wildlife. We had productive drives, patient guiding and enough time to observe animal behaviour. Returning to excellent meals and beautiful rooms completed the experience.

    5/5

We had previously visited the Maasai Mara and wanted a different Kenya experience. Samburu and Ol Pejeta delivered rare species, rugged scenery, rhinos and strong conservation stories. The journey felt fresh and distinctive rather than repeating a standard safari route.

    Elephants, Rare Giraffes and Rhinos

    5/5

Every day introduced a new wildlife highlight. We saw elephants beside the river, reticulated giraffes in beautiful light and rhinos at Ol Pejeta. The guide’s explanations helped us understand the animals rather than simply recording their names.

    Two Contrasting Northern Kenya Ecosystems

    5/5

Samburu’s dry bushland and river scenery felt completely different from Ol Pejeta’s cooler open plains. The contrast increased the wildlife variety and made the itinerary feel much richer than visiting a single destination. Both luxury properties provided excellent service.

The Samburu Special Five Were Fascinating

    5/5

Our guide explained how each of the five species is adapted to northern Kenya’s dry environment. Watching a gerenuk stretch upward to feed and seeing the patterns of reticulated giraffes in the warm light were particular highlights. The wildlife viewing was both exciting and educational.

Rare Wildlife and Rhinos in One Journey

    5/5

Samburu introduced us to animals we had never seen on previous African safaris, including Grevy’s zebras and gerenuks. Ol Pejeta then added memorable rhino encounters and a completely different landscape. Combining the two destinations created an unusually varied four-day wildlife journey.
