The peak months for this tour are from July to October when the wildebeest are in the north. During this period, you can see both the river crossings and many resident bird species active in the dry season. Many migratory birds also begin to arrive toward the end of this window.

You should bring a high-quality pair of binoculars and a camera with a lens of at least 400mm for the best bird photos. A field guide to East African birds is also very helpful for identification. Your guide will have a professional spotting scope to help you see distant raptors or water birds.

The Serengeti ecosystem is home to over 500 recorded bird species. During your 4-day birdwatching safari, you can realistically expect to identify between 100 and 150 different species. This includes a mix of large raptors, colorful rollers, and various water birds near the Mara River.

We provide packed lunch boxes so you do not have to return to the lodge during the peak viewing hours. This allows you to stay near the Mara River to catch the river crossings and the midday bird activity. Bottled water and snacks are also available in the vehicle.

This specific package focuses on the Northern Serengeti migration, but we pass through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. If you wish to descend into the crater for birding, we can add an extra day to your itinerary. The crater offers a different set of bird species, including many forest birds.
