Climb Kilimanjaro via Marangu During Your AFCON 2027 Tanzania Trip

Turn your AFCON 2027 journey in Tanzania into something far greater than a football holiday with this 5-day Kilimanjaro summit adventure via the Marangu Route. Designed for travelers who want to combine the passion and excitement of African football with one of Tanzania’s most famous natural attractions, this trek gives you the opportunity to experience Mount Kilimanjaro before, during or after your AFCON activities. Beginning from Moshi or Arusha, you will enter Kilimanjaro through Marangu Gate and gradually climb from lush montane rainforest to the open moorlands around Horombo, the alpine desert leading toward Kibo Hut and finally the high-altitude summit zone of Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. The Marangu Route follows a direct trail and uses mountain huts along the way, making it a distinctive alternative to Kilimanjaro’s camping routes. This five-day itinerary is relatively fast and physically demanding, so it is best suited to well-prepared travelers who want a compact summit challenge within a wider Tanzania itinerary. Whether football is the main reason bringing you to Tanzania or only one part of your holiday, Kilimanjaro gives you the chance to experience the country more deeply through its mountain landscapes, changing ecosystems and the extraordinary achievement of standing on the highest point in Africa

Day by day Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha or Moshi to Marangu Gate – Trek to Mandara Hut

Arusha or Moshi to Marangu Gate – Trek to Mandara Hut

Your Kilimanjaro journey begins in Arusha or Moshi, where our professional mountain team will meet you before driving toward Marangu Gate on the southeastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. After arriving at the gate, you will complete the required park procedures and receive a final trekking briefing before starting your ascent along the famous Marangu Route. The first section takes you into Kilimanjaro’s lush montane rainforest, where towering trees, giant ferns, moss-covered branches and rich vegetation create a cool and peaceful introduction to the mountain. The trail climbs steadily but gradually, allowing you to settle into the slow “pole pole” rhythm that is important throughout the climb. Along the way, you may hear forest birds and occasionally see blue monkeys or black-and-white colobus monkeys moving through the canopy. As you continue higher, your guide will explain the mountain environment and help you conserve energy for the more demanding sections ahead. Eventually, you will reach Mandara Hut, completing the first stage of your summit journey and leaving behind the excitement of your AFCON activities for the quiet natural atmosphere of Kilimanjaro.

Attractions: Marangu Gate, Kilimanjaro rainforest, giant ferns, forest birds, blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys and mountain vegetation.

Altitude: Approximately 1,860 m at Marangu Gate to around 2,700 m at Mandara Hut.

Trekking Time: Approximately 4–5 hours.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut – Through Moorland Landscapes

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut – Through Moorland Landscapes

After leaving Mandara Hut, you will continue climbing as the thick rainforest gradually disappears and the landscape opens into heath and moorland. This change in vegetation gives you a completely different view of Kilimanjaro, with wider horizons, volcanic terrain and increasingly impressive mountain scenery. On clear days, you may begin seeing both Kibo and Mawenzi rising ahead, providing a dramatic sense of the altitude still to be gained. The route climbs steadily through open slopes covered with giant heathers and distinctive high-altitude plants while your guide maintains a slow and controlled pace to help your body adapt. The journey is longer than Day 1, and you will begin feeling the effects of thinner air as you approach Horombo. For an AFCON traveler, this is where the Tanzania experience changes completely: instead of football crowds and city energy, you are surrounded by mountain wilderness and sweeping views across the country below. You will eventually reach Horombo Hut, an important staging point on the Marangu Route and your base before climbing much higher toward Kibo.

Attractions: Heath and moorland, Mawenzi views, Kibo views, giant heathers, volcanic terrain and expansive Kilimanjaro landscapes.

Altitude: Approximately 2,700 m to around 3,720 m.

Trekking Time: Approximately 6–7 hours.

Distance: Approximately 12 km.

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut – Enter the Alpine Desert

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut – Enter the Alpine Desert

Today takes you into the dramatic high-altitude environment between Mawenzi and Kibo as you leave Horombo and continue toward Kibo Hut. The vegetation gradually becomes sparse and eventually gives way to an alpine desert dominated by rock, gravel and wide open landscapes. You will cross the broad saddle between Kilimanjaro’s volcanic peaks while Kibo becomes increasingly imposing ahead of you. The thin air and higher elevation make it essential to maintain a slow pace and conserve energy because this is the final trekking day before the summit attempt. Your guide will monitor your condition throughout the journey, encouraging regular hydration and steady movement as you approach Kibo Hut. On arrival, the focus shifts completely toward preparation for the summit. You will organize your warm clothing, headlamp, gloves and other essential equipment before resting as much as possible. The summit climb begins around midnight, so this afternoon is especially important for conserving strength. After three days on Kilimanjaro, the highest point in Africa is now only one major challenge away.

Attractions: Alpine desert, Kilimanjaro Saddle, Kibo views, Mawenzi landscapes and dramatic high-altitude terrain.

Altitude: Approximately 3,720 m to around 4,700 m.

Trekking Time: Approximately 6–8 hours.

Distance: Approximately 10 km.

Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak – Descend to Horombo Hut

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak – Descend to Horombo Hut

Summit day begins around midnight when you leave Kibo Hut and start the most demanding section of your five-day Marangu adventure. Guided by headlamps, you will climb slowly through cold, steep and high-altitude terrain toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. The ascent requires patience and determination, and your guide will maintain a controlled pace while monitoring how you are responding to the altitude. As dawn approaches, the sky may begin to brighten over Mawenzi and the landscapes far below, creating one of the most memorable moments of the entire expedition. After reaching the crater rim, you will continue toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point in Africa. Standing at the summit turns your Tanzania visit into something far greater than a football journey: you may have arrived for AFCON, but now you will have experienced one of Africa’s greatest natural attractions and achieved the challenge of reaching the Roof of Africa. After a short celebration and photographs, you will begin the long descent back to Kibo and continue down toward Horombo Hut, completing an extremely demanding but unforgettable day.

Attractions: Gilman’s Point, crater rim, Kilimanjaro glaciers, sunrise views, Uhuru Peak, Mawenzi and panoramic summit scenery.

Altitude: Approximately 4,700 m to 5,895 m at Uhuru Peak, then down to around 3,720 m at Horombo Hut.

Trekking Time: Approximately 12–15 hours.

Distance: Approximately 20–22 km.

Day 5: Horombo Hut via Mandara to Marangu Gate – Return to Moshi

Horombo Hut via Mandara to Marangu Gate – Return to Moshi

Your final day begins with a long but enjoyable descent from Horombo through Kilimanjaro’s changing vegetation zones. As you lose altitude, the alpine and moorland scenery gradually gives way to thicker vegetation and eventually the lush montane rainforest encountered during the first day of the climb. The increasing oxygen and warmer temperatures make the lower sections feel more comfortable, allowing you to reflect on the extraordinary journey from Marangu Gate to Uhuru Peak and back. You will pass the Mandara area and continue descending beneath tall trees, giant ferns and rich forest vegetation before eventually reaching Marangu Gate. Here, the mountain trek officially comes to an end and you can celebrate your achievement with the team that supported you throughout the climb. You will then meet your vehicle for the drive back to Moshi. For travelers who originally came to Tanzania because of AFCON 2027, the journey ends with two completely different but equally memorable experiences: the energy of African football and the achievement of climbing Africa’s highest mountain.

Attractions: Horombo landscapes, Mandara area, Kilimanjaro rainforest, mountain vegetation, Marangu Gate and summit achievement celebration.

Altitude: Approximately 3,720 m down to around 1,860 m at Marangu Gate.

Trekking Time: Approximately 6–7 hours.

Distance: Approximately 20 km.
