Join a 5-Day Luxury Birdwatching Safari across Maasai Mara and Lake Nakuru with private birding drives, raptors, lake birds and premium lodging.
Discover two contrasting bird habitats on this 5-Day Luxury Birdwatching Safari across Maasai Mara and Lake Nakuru. The Maasai Mara’s open grasslands, acacia woodland, seasonal wetlands and riverine areas support secretary birds, eagles, vultures, rollers, bustards, hornbills and many smaller species. Two complete field days give you time to explore several habitats while also observing lions, elephants, giraffes and other large mammals. Lake Nakuru then introduces lakeshore, woodland and escarpment environments known for pelicans, flamingos, cormorants, raptors and diverse terrestrial birds. Your private guide will help locate and identify species, while luxury accommodation provides comfortable rooms and quiet surroundings for checklist updates.
You will leave Nairobi with our professional guide and travel approximately 260–280 kilometres to the Maasai Mara over five to six hours. During the journey through Great Rift Valley scenery, farmland and open countryside, you may begin observing roadside raptors, storks and common highland birds. After arriving at your luxury lodge or camp and enjoying lunch, you will start an afternoon birding drive through grasslands and acacia areas. Attractions may include rollers, secretary birds, bustards, vultures, hornbills and eagles, while elephants, giraffes, zebras and predators may also be encountered.
After breakfast, you will explore approximately 50–90 kilometres over seven to nine hours, concentrating on open-plains and woodland birdlife. Your guide will listen for calls, scan exposed branches and stop for both common and less frequently observed species. Possible attractions include martial and tawny eagles, secretary birds, ground hornbills, colourful rollers, vultures and larks. Large wildlife such as lions, elephants and giraffes will also form part of the day, while a picnic lunch will be enjoyed at an authorised location before the afternoon birding continues.
Your third day will involve another 50–90-kilometre route and seven to nine hours of birdwatching through riverine vegetation, seasonal wetlands and quieter sections of the reserve. The changing habitats may introduce kingfishers, herons, storks, bee-eaters, weavers and additional birds of prey. Hippos, crocodiles, elephants and predators may also appear around waterways. Your guide will adjust the route according to calls, weather and recent observations, while a picnic lunch and checklist breaks will be included.
After breakfast and check-out, you will travel approximately 230–250 kilometres toward Lake Nakuru over four and a half to six hours. Roadside attractions may include storks, raptors and agricultural bird species as the scenery changes into the Rift Valley highlands. If your accommodation is inside the park and the arrival time and entry conditions allow, you will take an afternoon birding drive for pelicans, flamingos, cormorants, herons, eagles and woodland species. Guests staying outside will enjoy relaxed lodge-ground birding and prepare for the morning activity.
Your final field session will cover approximately 25–50 kilometres over three to four hours inside Lake Nakuru National Park. Depending on season and water levels, attractions may include flamingos, pelicans, cormorants, herons, fish eagles and woodland birds, together with rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes, buffaloes and baboons. After the game drive, you will travel approximately 155–165 kilometres to Nairobi over two and a half to three and a half hours, with a meal or refreshment stop arranged before drop-off.
