This part of the 5-day Big Five safari in Serengeti Migration focuses on reaching the Mara River area. You will spend the afternoon looking for the large herds as they gather near the river. A surprising moment could be hearing the loud, rhythmic grunting of thousands of wildebeests as they move in a single long line across the horizon.

You will spend the morning exploring the northern reaches of the park. This is the best time to see the migration activity or even a river crossing if the timing is right. After a picnic lunch, you will begin your game drive back toward the Central Serengeti. This return trip takes about 4 to 5 hours. You might see a pride of lions reclaiming their territory or a group of hyenas competing with vultures over a meal. The changing light in the afternoon makes the golden grass of the Serengeti look beautiful for photography.

Early in the morning, you will drive about 3 hours to the Ngorongoro Crater. You will descend into the caldera for a half day tour. This is the best place to find the rare black rhino to complete your Big Five checklist. The crater floor is small, so animal sightings are very frequent. You might see a group of lions sleeping right next to the road, completely ignoring the vehicles. After lunch at the hippo pool, you will drive 190 kilometers back to Arusha, arriving in the late evening for your flight or hotel stay.
