Arrival Day: Arrival (Kilimanjaro Airport) to Arusha

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met by a driver and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. The journey takes approximately one hour and offers views of Mount Meru on a clear day. This evening includes a briefing with your guide to discuss the bird species you hope to see. Arusha is home to many garden birds like the Taveta Golden Weaver, which you might spot right at your lodge. It is a relaxing day to prepare for the start of your 5-day birdwatching safari in Serengeti Migration the following morning.

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

The safari starts with a drive to Tarangire National Park, covering about 120 kilometers in roughly 2.5 hours. Tarangire is a haven for birders with over 550 species recorded. You will spend the full day exploring the riverbanks and baobab ridges. Look out for the endemic Ashy Starling and the Yellow-collared Lovebird near the swamps. A positive unexpected moment is often seeing a Martial Eagle perched high in a baobab tree while a large herd of elephants passes underneath. You will enjoy a picnic lunch before heading to your accommodation late in the afternoon.

Day 2: Tarangire to Serengeti Central

After breakfast, you will drive toward the Central Serengeti, a journey of about 250 kilometers that takes 5 to 6 hours. You will pass through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where the altitude changes the bird life to montane species. Upon entering the Serengeti, you will begin a half day game drive in the Seronera Valley. This area is excellent for spotting the Grey-breasted Spurfowl and various vultures circling above the plains. You might find a Secretary Bird hunting snakes in the tall grass, a sight that is both rare and fascinating for bird enthusiasts.

A highlight of the day could be watching the massive wildebeest herds congregating near the river while Marabou Storks wait patiently nearby. Day 5: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha

You will depart early for the Ngorongoro Crater, which is a 3-hour drive from the Central Serengeti. You will spend the morning on a half day tour inside the world’s largest intact caldera. The soda lake on the crater floor is often filled with Lesser Flamingos, creating a pink haze on the water. You will also look for the specialized birds of the crater highland forests. After lunch at the hippo pool, you will drive 190 kilometers back to Arusha. The climb out of the crater provides one last panoramic view of this natural wonder before you reach Arusha in the evening.
