Distance: 10 km
Altitude: Horombo Hut 3,720m to Kibo Hut 4,703m
Time: 5–6 hours trekking
Vegetation / Physical Features: Alpine desert, dry saddle, volcanic rocks, open high-altitude plains, views between Mawenzi and Kibo
After breakfast, you will hike from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut, crossing the wide saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The landscape becomes dry, open, and more dramatic as you enter the alpine desert zone. This day is very important because Kibo Hut is the base for your full moon summit attempt. Our guide will manage your pace carefully, encourage slow movement, remind you to drink water, and help you conserve energy for the midnight climb. Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, you will rest, have an early dinner, and prepare your summit gear, including warm layers, gloves, headlamp, water, snacks, and walking poles. Even with full moonlight, a headlamp remains important for safety. Our guide will explain the summit plan clearly so you feel prepared for the night hike to Uhuru Peak.
