6 Days Family Wildlife Journey from Nairobi to the Mara

Comfortable Start from Nairobi

Your private guide collects the family from JKIA, Wilson Airport or an agreed Nairobi hotel at approximately 6:30–7:00 a.m. Travel 310–330 km through the central highlands, Nanyuki and Isiolo, allowing 5½–6½ hours plus planned refreshments, toilet breaks and lunch arrangements. Parents should keep medication, sun protection and children’s travel items in hand luggage. Arrive in the Samburu area around 1:00–2:00 p.m. for check-in and lunch.

First Family Game Drive

After rest, depart near 3:30 p.m. for a 2½–3-hour wildlife drive along open ground, acacia scrub and the Ewaso Ng’iro corridor. The guide will explain tracks, habitats and animal adaptations in clear, age-appropriate language. Children must remain seated when instructed and never attract wildlife with food or noise. Return around 6:30 p.m. for dinner and overnight in the confirmed family room or unit

A Cool Morning Search

Begin at approximately 6:15 a.m. with a 2½–3-hour drive, carrying breakfast boxes or returning for breakfast according to the family’s preference. Search for elephants, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, birds and predators while the guide helps children keep a simple wildlife checklist. No sighting is guaranteed, and calm observation is encouraged.

Family Rest at the Lodge

Return around 9:15 a.m. for breakfast and an unhurried break. Children may use confirmed lodge facilities only with adult supervision. Lunch is generally served at about 1:00 p.m., followed by quiet time during the hottest part of the day.

Afternoon Discovery

Leave around 3:30 p.m. for a second drive through a different habitat until approximately 6:30 p.m. The guide can answer conservation questions and adjust the pace within reserve rules. Return before dark for dinner. At unfenced accommodation, children must be escorted whenever moving outside the room.

Farewell Wildlife Drive

Start with a shorter outing from approximately 6:15 to 8:00 a.m. so children can enjoy one final Samburu search without making the transfer day excessively long. Return for breakfast, use the washrooms and complete check-out by about 9:00 a.m. Parents should confirm that essential medicine and comfort items remain accessible.

Scenery and Comfort Stops

Drive 300–340 km to the Lake Nakuru area through Isiolo and the central highlands, allowing 5½–7 hours excluding lunch and planned breaks. The private vehicle can stop reasonably, but arrival cannot be delayed indefinitely because road safety and dinner timing matter. Reach the premium property in the late afternoon, settle into the confirmed family accommodation and enjoy dinner. Children should not wander after dark, and lodge staff guidance must be followed around paths, balconies, pools and unfenced grounds.

Family-Friendly Nakuru Drive

Breakfast is served around 5:45–6:00 a.m., followed by check-out and a game drive from approximately 6:30 a.m. Spend 2½–3 hours exploring the park’s woodland, grassland and accessible lakeshore. The guide will look for birds, giraffes, buffaloes and rhinos while explaining why sightings and flamingo numbers change naturally. Children must remain inside the vehicle except at designated places.

Transfer to the Mara

Leave around 9:30–10:00 a.m. for the 235–270 km drive through the Rift Valley and Narok, allowing 5–6½ hours plus lunch and toilet stops. Arrive at the premium Maasai Mara camp in the late afternoon or early evening. Settle into the confirmed family room and have dinner. Parents should request cots, twin beds or interconnecting units during booking, since room configuration cannot be assumed at arrival

Early Wildlife Activity

Picnic and Flexible Pacing

The standard plan is an 8–10-hour outing with a picnic lunch around 12:30–1:00 p.m. at an authorised site. For younger children, shorter morning and afternoon drives may be considered only when camp location, park-entry rules and the confirmed quotation make them practical. Adults remain responsible for supervision at every stop.

Mara Evening

Continue through the softer afternoon light and return around 6:00–6:30 p.m. Children can review their wildlife checklist before dinner. An early meal may be requested but must be confirmed with the lodge

Breakfast and Check-Out

Enjoy breakfast around 6:30 a.m. and complete check-out by approximately 7:30–8:00 a.m. The guide will help load luggage while parents check rooms for medicines, chargers and children’s belongings. Wildlife may appear on the drive toward the gate from an inside-reserve camp, but the morning is primarily a transfer.

Journey Home

Drive 250–280 km through Narok to Nairobi, normally taking 5–6½ hours plus lunch and comfort stops. The private vehicle makes reasonable breaks possible, though traffic may affect arrival. Expect drop-off between 2:30 and 5:00 p.m. at JKIA, Wilson Airport or an agreed Nairobi hotel or residence. Families should book international flights after 8:00 p.m. or stay overnight in Nairobi when travelling with small children or when connection risk is high.
