6 Days Great Rift Kenya Road Safari: Mara to Amboseli

Leaving Nairobi Behind

Your private driver-guide will collect you from JKIA, Wilson Airport or an agreed Nairobi hotel at approximately 6:30–7:00 a.m. Begin the 250–280 km drive through the Great Rift Valley and Narok, allowing about 5–6½ hours plus viewpoint, refreshment and comfort stops. The road reveals cultivated highlands, escarpment scenery and increasingly open rangelands before you approach the Maasai Mara. Arrival at the selected premium camp is normally between 12:30 and 2:00 p.m. for check-in and lunch.

First Tracks in the Mara

After a short rest, depart at about 3:30 p.m. for a 2½–3-hour game drive across open grassland, acacia edges or riverine habitat. Your guide will interpret the landscape while searching responsibly for elephants, antelopes, giraffes, birds and predators. Sightings remain natural and the route will respond to current conditions. Return around 6:00–6:30 p.m. for dinner and your first premium overnight in the Mara.

Early Departure

Leave camp at approximately 6:15 a.m. with a packed breakfast, or eat before departure according to the lodge arrangement. Early light brings cooler conditions and wide views across the plains. Your guide will select the route using tracks, habitat, recent animal movement and authorised guide information without promising any particular species.

A Complete Day in the Reserve

Continue on an 8–10-hour game drive with a picnic lunch at a permitted site around 12:30–1:00 p.m. Explore grassland, drainage lines, marshes or river corridors according to road conditions. From roughly July to October, the broader Mara ecosystem may receive migrating wildebeest and zebras, although exact timing and river crossings are unpredictable.

Return by Sunset

Use the afternoon for a different section of the reserve before returning to camp around 6:00–6:30 p.m. Dinner and a relaxed evening follow, giving you time to appreciate a full day without changing accommodation.

Leaving the Mara

Breakfast is served at approximately 6:00–6:30 a.m., followed by check-out and departure near 7:00 a.m. The 235–270 km journey from the Maasai Mara to the Lake Nakuru area normally requires 5–6½ hours, depending on the camp, exit gate, weather and road conditions. Travel through Narok and changing Rift Valley farmland, with a lunch or refreshment stop arranged along the way.

Premium Nakuru Arrival

Reach the selected Lake Nakuru property between approximately 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. Guests staying outside the national park will check in and rest. When accommodation is inside the park and entry time permits, a short introductory drive may be possible, but it is not promised in the standard schedule. Dinner is served at the lodge after the guide confirms the early Day 4 breakfast, game drive and long transfer to Amboseli.

Rhino and Lakeshore Habitats

Have breakfast around 5:45–6:00 a.m., check out and begin a 2½–3-hour Lake Nakuru game drive at approximately 6:30 a.m. Explore woodland, grassland and accessible shoreline while looking naturally for birds, buffaloes, Rothschild’s giraffes and black or white rhinos. Flamingo numbers and wildlife positions change with water levels, food and seasonal movement, so no sighting is guaranteed.

South to Amboseli

Leave the Nakuru area near 9:30–10:00 a.m. for the 390–430 km drive through Nairobi and Emali to Amboseli. Allow 7½–9 hours including lunch, traffic and practical stops. This is the circuit’s longest transfer, and an evening game drive is not promised. Arrive at the premium Amboseli lodge in the early evening for check-in, dinner and rest before the complete Day 5 safari.

Dawn on the Southern Plains

Leave the lodge at approximately 6:15 a.m. with a packed breakfast, or eat before departure if the property serves early meals. Spend the cooler hours exploring Amboseli’s open plains, acacia pockets and wetland margins. Your guide will read tracks and animal movement while looking responsibly for elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, birds and predators. Mount Kilimanjaro may appear when cloud lifts, but even an early start cannot guarantee a clear view.

A Complete Amboseli Circuit

Continue for about 8–9 hours with lunch at an authorised picnic area or return to the lodge for a midday meal when location permits. The afternoon route may include a different section of the ecosystem, giving time to observe behaviour rather than chase a checklist. Seasonal dust, rain and wildlife movement determine the tracks used. Return around 5:30–6:00 p.m. for a shower, dinner and a second premium Amboseli overnight.

One Last Look at Amboseli

Enjoy breakfast at approximately 6:00–6:30 a.m. A short 1½–2-hour game drive may be taken before leaving the ecosystem, depending on lodge location, park-entry arrangements and the agreed Nairobi arrival target. This final outing offers a quiet farewell to the plains without repeating the long programme completed on Day 5. Return for check-out by about 9:00 a.m.

Road Journey to Nairobi

Begin the 220–240 km drive to Nairobi, allowing about 4–5 hours plus a practical comfort stop and possible city congestion. Lunch is taken en route or on arrival according to timing. Expected drop-off is approximately 2:00–4:30 p.m. at JKIA, Wilson Airport or an agreed Nairobi address. Guests connecting to an international flight should allow a generous traffic buffer and preferably choose an evening departure.
