Morning, afternoon and full-day game drives create opportunities to observe northern dry-country species, rhinos, birds, predators and plains wildlife without guaranteeing any particular sighting. Travel is in a private 4×4 Land Cruiser with an experienced driver-guide, planned comfort stops and premium accommodation. Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu – Cross Kenya’s Highlands into the Wild North

The Northern Road

Pickup from JKIA, Wilson Airport or your Nairobi hotel is arranged at approximately 6:30–7:00 a.m. Travel 310–330 km through Thika, Karatina, Nanyuki and Isiolo, allowing 5½–6½ hours of driving plus a refreshment stop. The road reveals productive highlands, distant mountain scenery when skies are clear and the gradual transition into drier northern country. Arrive in the Samburu area around 1:00–2:00 p.m. for lunch and check-in.

First Reserve Drive

After a short rest, leave at about 3:30 p.m. for a 2½–3-hour game drive through open ground, acacia scrub and riverine woodland beside the Ewaso Ng’iro. Your guide may search for elephants, antelopes, giraffes, zebras, birds and predators, while explaining how water shapes this ecosystem. Sightings remain natural and are never guaranteed. Return near sunset for dinner and your first premium overnight in northern Kenya.

Day 2: Samburu – A Complete Day beside the Ewaso Ng’iro

Cool-Hour Exploration

Begin around 6:15 a.m. with tea or coffee before a 2½–3-hour drive. Morning conditions are useful for reading tracks and exploring the river corridor, rocky ridges and open plains. Samburu’s characteristic northern wildlife may include Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich, although the route follows current animal movement rather than a fixed checklist.

Road-Safari Pause

Return at approximately 9:15 a.m. for breakfast. The late morning is reserved for rest, lodge facilities and lunch around 1:00 p.m., giving everyone a break from the vehicle during the hottest part of the day.

Changing Afternoon Country

Depart again at about 3:30 p.m. for another 2½–3-hour search in a different sector. The guide will use water conditions, tracks and recent observations to select the route. Arrive back near 6:30 p.m. for dinner and preparation for the following day’s long transfer.

Day 3: Samburu to Lake Nakuru – From Semi-Arid North to Rift Valley Forest

Farewell to Samburu

Leave at approximately 6:15 a.m. for a final 1½–2-hour game drive, revisiting productive habitat or exploring a new river section. Return for breakfast, complete check-out and depart around 9:00 a.m. Your luggage remains secured in the safari vehicle, and the guide will confirm the day’s road and lunch arrangements.

Across Central Kenya

The journey to the Lake Nakuru area covers 300–340 km and normally takes 5½–7 hours, excluding lunch and comfort stops. Travel through Isiolo and the central highlands before descending toward the Rift Valley. The changing farms, towns, escarpments and vegetation are an important part of this Kenya road safari. Arrival is expected in the late afternoon or early evening, depending on traffic and the selected property. Check in, relax and enjoy dinner. A late park drive is not forced after the long transfer.

Day 4: Lake Nakuru to Maasai Mara – Rhino Habitat and Rift Valley Roads

Morning inside Lake Nakuru

Have an early breakfast around 5:45–6:00 a.m., check out and enter the park for a 2½–3-hour drive from approximately 6:30 a.m. Explore accessible woodland, grassland, viewpoints and lakeshore habitat. Possible observations include buffaloes, Rothschild’s giraffes, black or white rhinos, pelicans, flamingos and fish eagles, but wildlife visibility and bird numbers change with natural conditions.

Overland to the Mara

Leave around 9:30–10:00 a.m. for the 235–270 km journey through the Rift Valley and Narok to the Maasai Mara. Driving takes about 5–6½ hours plus lunch and comfort stops. Reach your premium camp in the late afternoon or early evening, depending on road and gate location. Wildlife encountered en route to camp may be enjoyed when entry conditions permit, but a separate afternoon drive is not guaranteed after a late arrival. Dinner concludes the day.

Day 5: Maasai Mara – Full-Day Savannah Expedition

Depart at approximately 6:15 a.m. with a packed breakfast, or eat before leaving if arranged. Morning light and cooler temperatures often support active wildlife viewing. Your guide will choose routes using tracks, habitat, weather and recent animal movement, with possible searches for big cats, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, antelopes and abundant birdlife.

Picnic in the Reserve

Continue on a full-day drive lasting about 8–10 hours, with lunch around 12:30–1:00 p.m. at an authorised picnic area. During relevant migration months, the guide may explore a Mara River sector when distance and conditions make it sensible; herds and crossings cannot be scheduled or promised.

Savannah Evening

Use the softer afternoon light to explore another habitat before returning around 6:00–6:30 p.m. Dinner is served at camp as the group reviews the road journey from Samburu to the Mara.

Day 6: Maasai Mara to Nairobi – Final Views and City Drop-Off

Leaving the Reserve

Breakfast is served around 6:30 a.m., followed by check-out at approximately 7:30–8:00 a.m. If the accommodation is inside the reserve, the drive toward the gate may provide final landscape or wildlife observations, but it is not sold as a separate game drive. The guide will secure luggage before joining the public road.

Return via Narok

Travel 250–280 km to Nairobi, generally requiring 5–6½ hours plus lunch and comfort stops. The route crosses Maasai country and the Great Rift Valley before city traffic begins. Arrival is normally between 2:30 and 5:00 p.m., depending on the gate, road conditions and Nairobi congestion. Drop-off is available at JKIA, Wilson Airport or an agreed hotel or city address. Choose a flight after 8:00 p.m. or reserve a Nairobi night when the connection is tight.

1. Why choose this Kenya road safari instead of flying?

Travelling by road shows the environmental and cultural transitions between northern Kenya, the Rift Valley and the Maasai Mara. It also keeps the same private guide and vehicle throughout the journey, avoids strict light-aircraft baggage limits and permits planned comfort stops. Guests should still be comfortable with several long transfer days.

2. Is the safari private?

Yes, the standard design uses a private 4×4 Land Cruiser and a dedicated driver-guide for the booked party. This gives more control over viewing stops, comfort breaks and photography within reserve rules. The quotation should confirm the vehicle capacity, guide language and whether any transfer or activity is shared.

3. Which is the longest driving day?

Samburu to Lake Nakuru covers 300–340 km and usually requires 5½–7 hours excluding lunch and stops. Nairobi to Samburu and Lake Nakuru to the Maasai Mara are also substantial journeys. Traffic, weather, gate choice and roadworks can extend the stated driving ranges.

4. Are all roads paved?

Major intercity sections are generally paved, while reserve roads, gate approaches and some camp access roads are unsealed. Rain may create mud, standing water or rough sections, while dry conditions can be dusty. The guide adjusts speed and routing for safety rather than trying to maintain an unrealistic fixed arrival time.

5. Are comfort and meal stops included in the schedule?

Yes. The guide plans clean, practical stops on transfer routes and coordinates lunch with the day’s timing. Stop locations can change according to traffic, guest needs and safe parking. Inform the operator before travel about mobility needs, dietary restrictions or a medical condition requiring more frequent breaks.

6. Are wildlife sightings guaranteed?

No. All featured animals are free-ranging, and their location changes with water, food, weather and disturbance. The driver-guide uses tracks, calls, habitat knowledge and authorised guide information to improve opportunities. The itinerary guarantees scheduled wildlife-viewing effort, not a particular species or behaviour.

7. Will we see the Great Migration in the Maasai Mara?

Migration timing varies with rainfall and grazing. Herds may be present in the wider ecosystem during part of the year, but their exact location and river-crossing behaviour cannot be predicted. Day 5 can focus on the most promising accessible sector, yet no responsible operator can guarantee a crossing.

8. What luggage works best for the road safari?

A soft-sided duffel or medium suitcase is easier to store than several hard cases. Bring layered clothing, sun protection, a light rain jacket, closed shoes, binoculars and prescribed medication. Share unusually large photography cases, mobility aids or children’s equipment before booking so vehicle space can be confirmed.

9. Can the itinerary be reversed?

It may be possible to operate Nairobi–Mara–Nakuru–Samburu–Nairobi, but driving patterns, room availability and park-entry timing will change. A reversed plan must be quoted and confirmed as a separate itinerary rather than assumed after booking. Seasonal road conditions may also influence the recommended sequence.

10. Where does the safari finish?

Standard completion points are JKIA, Wilson Airport, a central Nairobi hotel or another agreed city address. The expected arrival is 2:30–5:00 p.m., but it is not a flight guarantee. International departures should preferably be after 8:00 p.m.; otherwise book a Nairobi night.
