6 Days Kenya Overland Lakes Safari: Mara to Naivasha

From the Capital to Narok

Your Kenya road safari begins with pickup from a Nairobi hotel, residence or the airport at about 6:30–7:00 a.m. After meeting the driver-guide, travel 225–280 km through the Great Rift Valley and Narok toward the confirmed Maasai Mara gate. The drive normally takes 5–6½ hours before long stops. A viewpoint pause and lunch are arranged according to traffic, weather and your lodge location.

First Drive Across the Mara

After check-in and a short rest, leave at approximately 3:30–4:00 p.m. for a two- to three-hour game drive, subject to arrival and reserve closing times. Open grassland, acacia country and seasonal watercourses may reveal elephants, giraffes, antelopes, predators and raptors, although none is guaranteed. Return to your premium camp or lodge for dinner, a route briefing and overnight rest.

Wildlife Tracks and Open Plains

Breakfast is served at about 6:00 a.m. before a departure close to sunrise. Spend six to nine hours exploring selected sectors of the Maasai Mara, including the lunch pause. The guide chooses roads using current wildlife movement, track condition and reserve rules rather than following a fixed circuit. Early hours can offer cooler temperatures, softer light and active animal behaviour across grassland, woodland and riverine habitats.

Picnic and Afternoon Exploration

Enjoy a packed lunch at an authorised picnic site around 12:30–1:00 p.m., keeping food and waste away from wildlife. Continue through a different section during the afternoon, with stops for sightings and landscape interpretation. Migratory herds may enter the wider ecosystem during parts of roughly July to October, but their position and river crossings remain unpredictable. Arrive back near sunset for dinner and a relaxed evening.

Leaving the Savannah

After breakfast around 6:30 a.m., check out by approximately 7:30 a.m. and start the 220–270 km transfer to the Nakuru area. A short wildlife-viewing exit may be possible when the lodge and gate position allow, but it is not a full game drive. The route usually requires 5–6½ hours before a substantial lunch stop and follows the Narok corridor toward the Mau highlands.

Roadside Kenya in Transition

The day reveals a changing human and natural landscape: cattle country, trading centres, farms, escarpment slopes and cooler uplands. Your guide schedules safe comfort stops and explains how road conditions can change after rain or during busy market periods. Reach the confirmed Nakuru lodge in the late afternoon, check in and rest after the transfer. Dinner is normally served at about 7:30 p.m.; any extra park activity must appear in the booking.

Woodland, Shoreline and Rhino Habitat

Take breakfast near 6:00 a.m. and enter Lake Nakuru National Park for roughly three to four hours of game viewing. Explore a compact mixture of woodland, grassland, rocky viewpoints and lake-edge habitat where rhinos, buffaloes, giraffes, baboons and waterbirds may be encountered. Flamingo abundance varies with water depth, food and regional movement, so a large flock cannot be promised.

Northward to the Alkaline Basin

Leave Nakuru in the late morning or around noon and travel 85–150 km toward Lake Bogoria, depending on the reserve entrance and selected property. Allow two to four hours for the transfer, lunch and local road conditions. The route becomes warmer and drier as volcanic landforms begin to dominate. Check in during the afternoon and follow the guide’s instructions around geothermal ground; hot springs and unstable surfaces must never be approached without permission.

Flamingos and Geothermal Country

After breakfast at approximately 6:30 a.m., spend about two to three hours in Lake Bogoria National Reserve. Approved tracks and viewing areas reveal an alkaline lake framed by escarpment, dry bush and geothermal features. Lesser flamingos move between Rift Valley lakes according to ecological conditions, while high water can conceal some hot springs. Observe birds quietly and remain well clear of steam vents and boiling water.

Road to Freshwater Naivasha

Depart by late morning for the 150–180 km journey to Lake Naivasha, generally taking three to four hours before a relaxed lunch stop. The drive returns through changing highland and Rift Valley scenery before reaching the freshwater lake in the mid- to late afternoon. Check in and enjoy the garden or lakeside setting. A boat trip is undertaken only if prebooked and judged safe by the licensed operator; otherwise, use the afternoon for rest before dinner.

A Final Rift Valley Morning

Breakfast is served at about 6:30 a.m. before the confirmed morning activity. Options may include a one-hour licensed boat trip, a guided Crescent Island walk or a quiet lakeshore period, depending on the quotation, weather and operator rules. Boat guests must wear the provided life jacket and keep a safe distance from hippos. Walking participants follow their guide and never approach wildlife independently.

Completing the Road Circuit

Check out around 10:00–10:30 a.m. and drive 90–110 km to Nairobi, normally two to three hours without severe congestion. Lunch can be arranged in Naivasha or Nairobi according to the onward schedule. Drop-off is available at a central hotel, agreed residence or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport with a generous flight buffer. The journey ends after linking four distinct wildlife and lake landscapes entirely by road.
