Here, we take a break to rest before continuing to Barranco Camp (13,000 ft). This day is spent at altitude, following the mountaineering principle of 'walk high, sleep low' to aid acclimatization. We start the day by descending into the Great Barranco, a massive ravine. Steeply hiking the Great Barranco Wall, we cross over to the southeastern slopes of Kibo. The hike is not technical but is long and tiring. Passing beneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, we head towards the Karanga valley. For those feeling strong, there's an optional mid-afternoon acclimatization hiki up to around 4200m. Then we descend back tobarafu camp for the night.
