Although the scenery is not as varied as the western routes, Rongai makes up for this by passing through true wilderness areas for days before joining the Marangu route at Kibo camp. Rongai is a moderately difficult route and is highly recommended for those with less backpacking experience.
On your first day, you will begin your hiking journey at the Rongai Gate, which stands at an elevation of 1950 meters. From here, you will embark on a 6-hour hike to reach your first cave camp, located at an altitude of 2600 meters.

This section of the hike will take you to an elevation of 3600 meters, where you will spend the night in a copy camp.

You will continue your ascent to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, which sits at an altitude of 4330 meters. The trail will take you through the moorland, where you will see exotic plants and wildlife. Your guide will wake you up at midnight for tea and biscuits before beginning your ascent. The trail will take you to the summit of Uhuru Peak, which stands at an elevation of 5895 meters. The hike will be challenging, but the breath taking views from the top will make it all worth it. Then you will descend to horombo hut for deserved rest and overnight.

You will descend from Kibo Hut to Horombo Hut, which sits at an elevation of 3720 meters. This section of the hike will take you through lush forests and rocky terrain, providing a stark contrast to the barren landscapes you have encountered so far. Once you reach the Marangu Gate, you will be driven back to moshi, where you will be dropped off at your hotel. This concludes your incredible journey to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, and you will have the opportunity to celebrate your achievement with your fellow hikers.
