6 Days New Year Kenya Safari: Northern Plains to the Mara

Start the year on a 6-day premium Kenya safari through Samburu, Lake Nakuru and Maasai Mara with private drives and festive lodge options.

Welcome the New Year on a premium private safari through Samburu, Lake Nakuru and the Maasai Mara.

This six-day New Year Kenya safari is created for travellers who want to begin the year with a meaningful journey across three contrasting wildlife landscapes. Start among Samburu’s northern plains and the Ewaso Ng’iro, continue to Lake Nakuru’s forest, rhino habitat and changing birdlife, and finish with a full day in the Maasai Mara. Departure dates can be adjusted so New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day falls in the preferred reserve, subject to premium lodge availability and minimum-stay rules. Countdown events, gala dinners, sparkling wine, cakes and private celebrations are never assumed; each must be confirmed with the selected property. A private 4×4 and professional guide provide continuity throughout the road safari, while weather, wildlife, migration movement and holiday traffic remain naturally variable.

Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu – Begin the Year with a Northern Adventure

Nairobi to Samburu – Begin the Year with a Northern Adventure

Fresh Start from Nairobi

Your private guide collects you at JKIA or an agreed Nairobi hotel around 6:30–7:00 a.m. Drive 310–330 km through the central highlands, Nanyuki and Isiolo, normally taking 5½–6½ hours plus refreshments. New Year holiday traffic may extend the schedule, so punctual departure is important. Watch the landscape shift from farms and highlands into Samburu’s drier country. Arrive around 1:00–2:00 p.m. for lunch, premium check-in and a short rest.

First Safari of the Journey

Depart at approximately 3:30 p.m. for a 2½–3-hour drive through acacia scrub, open country and Ewaso Ng’iro river habitat. Potential sightings include elephants, northern species, birds and predators, but no animal is promised for the first day of the year. Return near sunset for dinner and any celebration specifically confirmed by the lodge.

Day 2: Samburu – New-Year Wildlife across River and Plains

Samburu – New-Year Wildlife across River and Plains

Dawn of a New Adventure

Begin around 6:15 a.m. with tea or coffee and a game drive along the river corridor and surrounding dry-country habitat. Search for Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich while learning about their adaptations. Weather and animal movement determine the actual route and sightings.

Resolution to Slow Down

Return around 9:15 a.m. for breakfast, rest and time to enjoy the lodge. Lunch is served near 1:00 p.m. This midday pause creates a calmer start to the year and avoids the strongest heat.

A Golden Afternoon

Leave again at approximately 3:30 p.m. for another 2½–3-hour drive in a different sector. Enjoy the changing light without chasing a guaranteed checklist. Return by 6:30 p.m. for dinner and a briefing about the cross-country journey to Nakuru.

Day 3: Samburu to Lake Nakuru – Carry the Journey into the Rift Valley

Samburu to Lake Nakuru – Carry the Journey into the Rift Valley

Last Northern Moments

Join a final 1½–2-hour Samburu drive around 6:15 a.m. before breakfast and check-out near 9:00 a.m. The guide confirms luggage, road conditions and lunch arrangements. Guests who celebrated late should still follow the agreed departure time so the group does not reach Nakuru after unsafe hours.

New-Year Road South

Travel 300–340 km via Isiolo and central Kenya, requiring 5½–7 hours plus lunch and comfort stops. Highland farms, towns, escarpment scenery and changing vegetation keep the transfer visually interesting. Rain or holiday traffic may delay progress. Arrive in the Lake Nakuru area in the late afternoon or early evening, complete premium check-in and enjoy dinner. The schedule deliberately avoids forcing a park drive after the long journey, leaving the key Nakuru experience for the cooler following morning.

Day 4: Lake Nakuru to Maasai Mara – Conservation and a New Horizon

Lake Nakuru to Maasai Mara – Conservation and a New Horizon

First-Light Nakuru Drive

After breakfast around 5:45–6:00 a.m., check out and begin a 2½–3-hour game drive at approximately 6:30 a.m. Explore woodland, grassland and accessible lakeshore zones for rhinos, giraffes, buffaloes and birdlife. Flamingo abundance and waterbird distribution depend on lake conditions, so no count is guaranteed.

Toward the Mara Plains

Leave around 9:30–10:00 a.m. and travel 235–270 km through the Rift Valley and Narok. Driving usually takes 5–6½ hours plus lunch and comfort stops. Reach your premium Mara property late afternoon or early evening, depending on road and gate location. Enjoy dinner and any New Year feature confirmed for that date. If the celebration has already occurred earlier in the itinerary, the evening remains a relaxed preparation for the full safari day.

Day 5: Maasai Mara – A Full Day of New-Year Discovery

Maasai Mara – A Full Day of New-Year Discovery

New Beginnings on the Savannah

Depart at approximately 6:15 a.m. with packed breakfast and lunch. Explore open plains, drainage lines and riverine habitat as the guide searches for wildlife using tracks and recent movement. Possible subjects include big cats, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, antelopes and birds, but every encounter remains unpredictable.

A Meaningful First Adventure

Spend 8–10 hours in the reserve with a picnic lunch around 12:30–1:00 p.m. at an authorised site. Take time to observe behaviour rather than treating the day as a race. Seasonal migration areas may be visited when sensible, although herds and crossings cannot be scheduled.

Sunset on the Journey

Continue in softer afternoon light before returning around 6:00–6:30 p.m. Dinner and your final premium night provide time to reflect on the year’s first major experience.

Maasai Mara to Nairobi – Complete Your New-Year Safari

Final Mara Breakfast

Breakfast begins near 6:30 a.m., followed by check-out at approximately 7:30–8:00 a.m. Confirm gifts, documents and luggage before departure. Wildlife seen while driving toward the gate may offer a final memory, but this is not a separate scheduled game drive.

Return with New Memories

Travel 250–280 km through Narok and the Great Rift Valley, normally taking 5–6½ hours plus lunch and comfort stops. Holiday traffic may delay Nairobi arrival beyond the expected 2:30–5:00 p.m. window. Your guide drops you directly at JKIA, Wilson Airport or the agreed hotel or address. International flights should depart after 8:00 p.m.; a Nairobi night is recommended when January traffic, family needs or airport procedures make a tight connection unwise.
This extra night can also provide a relaxed ending to the celebration.

RELATED FAQS ABOUT 6 Days New Year Kenya Safari: Northern Plains to the Mara

    7. Can we request a private celebration?

Often, depending on lodge capacity and cost. Options might include a cake, decorated table or private meal, but remote supplies are limited during peak season. The arrangement is valid only after written confirmation and payment of any supplement.

    6. Will we see migration herds?

No migration event is guaranteed. Rainfall and grazing determine herd movement, and the famous Mara River crossings do not follow the calendar New Year. Resident wildlife still offers rewarding game viewing, but marketing should never promise a crossing.

    5. Can children join the New Year safari?

Yes, subject to room availability and realistic expectations about long transfers. Parents must supervise children around wildlife and at unfenced camps. Loud late-night celebrations may not suit very young children, so request a quieter room location where possible.

    4. What weather should we expect?

January often brings warm days, but conditions vary and showers remain possible. Samburu may be hot and dry, while mornings in highland or Rift Valley areas can feel cooler. Pack breathable clothing, layers, sun protection and a light waterproof jacket.

    3. Are New Year rates higher?

They are often higher because the period has strong demand, festive supplements and limited premium rooms. Cancellation terms may also become stricter. A complete quotation should state holiday charges, room category, meal plan and any mandatory minimum stay.

    1. Where can New Year’s Eve fall in the itinerary?

It can be scheduled in Samburu, the Lake Nakuru area or Maasai Mara by adjusting the departure date. Most guests prefer a non-transfer evening. Final placement depends on room availability, minimum stays and the type of celebration offered by each property.

    2. Is a countdown party included?

Not automatically. Some lodges organise gala dinners or countdowns, while others offer a quiet normal evening. Request the current programme and confirm any included drinks, entertainment, cake or private setup in writing before booking.

    8. Can dietary needs be managed during festive meals?

Many properties can help when informed early. Provide clear details about allergies, religious requirements or preferences before confirmation. Festive buffets may have cross-contact risks, so guests with severe allergies should discuss practical safeguards directly with the property through the operator.

    9. When should we reserve this safari?

Reserve early because New Year availability changes quickly, especially for family units and premium rooms. Waiting can force different dates or accommodation. Confirm international flights carefully before accepting non-refundable holiday terms.

    10. Is an evening flight safe on Day 6?

A flight after 8:00 p.m. may work, but holiday traffic and road delays remain possible. A Nairobi night is the safer option when the international connection is important. The operator cannot guarantee an airline connection based on an estimated road arrival.

Beginning the year beside the Ewaso Ng’iro was far more meaningful than a city party. Our lodge’s celebration was confirmed beforehand, and the next morning’s Samburu drive was unforgettable. Nakuru and the Mara gave the journey excellent variety.
