CLIMB FROM KIBO HUT TO SUMMIT BACK TO HOROMBO HUT

The final ascent begins at 1 a.m. with a slow and steady climb through the darkness. We are guided by torchlight, making our way up the switchback trail through loose volcanic scree. The air is thin and the terrain is steep, but we are determined to make progress towards the summit. As we reach the crater rim at Gillman's Point, we take a moment to rest and admire the stunning sunrise over Mawenzi. The view is breath-taking, and we feel a sense of awe and accomplishment as we take it in. We make our way past the glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area, feeling a sense of accomplishment as we reach the top. After some rest and refreshment, we continue the descent to Horombo Hut. The descent is surprisingly fast, and we feel a sense of relief and accomplishment as we reach the bottom. As we arrive at Horombo hut, we are greeted with hot soup and warm blankets. We rest and recuperate, taking in the stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
