Take your AFCON 2027 journey in Tanzania beyond football with this unforgettable 7-day Kilimanjaro Machame Route climb, created for football supporters and adventure travelers who want to experience one of Africa’s most remarkable natural attractions while visiting the country. After enjoying the passion, atmosphere and excitement surrounding African football, Mount Kilimanjaro offers an entirely different challenge: seven days of trekking through rainforest, moorland, volcanic landscapes and high-altitude desert before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point in Africa. The 7-day Machame itinerary gives you a more gradual mountain experience than shorter versions by separating the Barranco-to-Karanga and Karanga-to-Barafu sections, allowing additional time for acclimatization before the summit attempt. Beginning and ending in Moshi, you will climb through Machame Camp, Shira Cave, Lava Tower, Barranco Camp, Karanga Camp and Barafu Camp before making the final ascent to Uhuru Peak and descending through Mweka. Whether you choose to climb before your AFCON football program, during an extended Tanzania stay or after the tournament atmosphere has ended, this adventure allows you to combine two memorable experiences in one journey: the passion of African football and the achievement of standing on the Roof of Africa.
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins in Moshi, where our professional mountain guide and climbing team will meet you in the morning for a final briefing before traveling toward Machame Gate on the southern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. After completing the necessary park registration procedures, you will begin your first trek along the famous Machame Route and immediately enter the mountain’s lush montane rainforest. The trail climbs steadily beneath towering trees, giant ferns, moss-covered branches and dense tropical vegetation, creating an impressive introduction to the changing environments you will experience over the next seven days. Your guide will introduce the slow and steady “pole pole” hiking rhythm that is important for conserving energy and gradually adapting to altitude. Along the route, you may encounter forest birds and occasionally blue monkeys or black-and-white colobus monkeys while enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes. As you climb higher, the forest gradually begins to thin before you arrive at Machame Camp, marking the completion of your first day and the beginning of your journey toward Africa’s highest summit.
Attractions: Machame Gate, Kilimanjaro rainforest, giant ferns, tropical mountain vegetation, forest birds and possible monkey sightings.
Altitude: Approximately 1,800 m at Machame Gate to about 2,835 m at Machame Camp.
Trekking Time: Approximately 5–7 hours.
Distance: Approximately 11 km.
After waking on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, you will continue your climb as the rainforest slowly disappears and the landscape opens into heath and moorland. The route becomes steeper in several sections as you gain altitude, but the increasingly wide mountain views provide an impressive reward for your effort. You will climb through areas of heather, volcanic rock and unique high-altitude vegetation while looking back toward the plains stretching far below Kilimanjaro. On a clear day, the enormous Kibo massif may begin to dominate the skyline ahead, providing your first powerful sense of how much higher the journey will take you. Your professional guide will maintain a controlled pace and encourage regular hydration and short breaks as your body continues adjusting to the altitude. Eventually, you will reach the broad Shira Plateau, a striking volcanic landscape that contrasts dramatically with the rainforest of the previous day. The trek finishes around Shira Cave, where you can enjoy the open mountain environment and prepare for the following day’s important acclimatization climb toward Lava Tower.
Attractions: Shira Plateau, heath and moorland vegetation, volcanic landscapes, Kibo views and expansive mountain scenery.
Altitude: Approximately 2,835 m to around 3,750 m.
Trekking Time: Approximately 4–6 hours.
Distance: Approximately 5 km.
Today is an important acclimatization stage of your Machame Route expedition. You will leave Shira Cave in the morning and continue eastward into increasingly rugged high-altitude terrain as the vegetation becomes thinner and the mountain environment takes on a more dramatic volcanic character. The trail gradually climbs toward Lava Tower, a striking volcanic formation standing at approximately 4,600 meters. Reaching this elevation exposes your body to significantly higher altitude before you later descend, following the valuable “climb high, sleep lower” acclimatization principle used on Kilimanjaro. After spending time around Lava Tower, you will begin descending toward Barranco Valley, where the environment changes once again as remarkable giant groundsels and other hardy mountain plants appear among the surrounding cliffs. The descent helps many climbers feel more comfortable after reaching the higher elevation at Lava Tower. Eventually, the famous Barranco Wall comes into view, rising dramatically above the camp area and providing a glimpse of the next morning’s challenge.
Attractions: Lava Tower, alpine landscapes, volcanic formations, giant groundsels, Barranco Valley, Kibo views and Barranco Wall.
Altitude: Approximately 3,750 m to 4,600 m at Lava Tower, then down to around 3,900 m at Barranco Camp.
Trekking Time: Approximately 6–8 hours.
Distance: Approximately 10 km.
Your fourth day begins with one of the most famous and exciting sections of the Machame Route: the climb over the Barranco Wall. From the camp, the wall may appear intimidating, but it is a guided scramble along a well-established mountain route rather than a technical rock-climbing section. Your guide will lead you carefully upward while helping you negotiate the steeper areas and maintain a comfortable rhythm. As you gain height, spectacular views open across Barranco Valley, the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscapes far below. After reaching the top of the wall, you will continue across a series of ridges and valleys where the high-altitude scenery becomes increasingly rugged and dramatic. The trail eventually descends toward the Karanga Valley before climbing again to Karanga Camp. Because the 7-day Machame itinerary stops here rather than continuing immediately to Barafu, you gain valuable additional time at altitude, allowing your body to adjust before moving toward the summit base the following day. This makes Karanga an important part of the overall acclimatization strategy and gives you time to conserve energy for the increasingly demanding stages ahead.
Attractions: Barranco Wall, Karanga Valley, high-altitude ridges, Kibo views, alpine scenery and dramatic volcanic terrain.
Altitude: Approximately 3,900 m to around 3,995 m at Karanga Camp.
Trekking Time: Approximately 4–5 hours.
Distance: Approximately 5 km.
After completing an important acclimatization night at Karanga, you will continue toward Barafu Camp, the final major base before your summit attempt. The trail gradually rises through increasingly barren alpine desert where vegetation becomes scarce and the landscape is dominated by volcanic rock, mountain ridges and expansive views. Although today’s distance is relatively short, the thinner air makes a slow and controlled pace essential. Your guide will monitor how you are adapting to the altitude and encourage you to conserve as much energy as possible for the long summit day ahead. As you approach Barafu, you may enjoy dramatic views toward Mawenzi Peak and Kilimanjaro’s upper slopes, while the harsh alpine environment provides a clear sense that you are now close to the highest point of the expedition. Upon reaching Barafu Camp, you will have time to settle in, organize your summit clothing and equipment and receive a detailed briefing from your guide about the nighttime ascent. The remainder of the day is focused on resting, staying hydrated and mentally preparing for the most challenging and rewarding stage of your Kilimanjaro journey.
Attractions: Alpine desert, Barafu ridge, Mawenzi views, Kibo slopes and dramatic high-altitude landscapes.
Altitude: Approximately 3,995 m to around 4,673 m.
Trekking Time: Approximately 3–4 hours.
Distance: Approximately 4 km.
Summit day begins around midnight, when you will prepare your equipment and start climbing through the darkness toward the crater rim. This is the longest, coldest and most demanding stage of the expedition, but it is also the day that brings you closest to the goal you have worked toward throughout the week. Guided by headlamps, you will move slowly along a zigzag trail through steep scree and high-altitude terrain while your guide carefully controls the pace and monitors your condition. As the night progresses, you will climb toward Stella Point on the crater rim, where the first light of sunrise may begin illuminating Mawenzi Peak, the glaciers and the landscapes far below. From Stella Point, you will continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point in Africa. Standing beneath the famous summit sign after days of climbing is an extraordinary moment of achievement and one of the greatest highlights you can add to an AFCON 2027 Tanzania journey. After photographs and a short celebration, you will begin descending to Barafu for a brief rest before continuing much farther down the mountain toward Mweka Camp, where the increased oxygen and warmer environment provide welcome relief after your summit effort.
Attractions: Stella Point, Kilimanjaro glaciers, sunrise views, crater rim, Uhuru Peak, Mawenzi and panoramic summit landscapes.
Altitude: Approximately 4,673 m to 5,895 m at Uhuru Peak, then down to around 3,100 m at Mweka Camp.
Trekking Time: Approximately 11–14 hours.
Distance: Approximately 17 km.
Your final morning on Mount Kilimanjaro begins with a relaxed descent from Mweka Camp through increasingly lush vegetation as you return to the montane rainforest. After several days in the dry and rocky upper zones of the mountain, the thick forest, warmer temperatures and richer oxygen levels create a noticeable change in atmosphere. You will follow the descending trail beneath tall trees, ferns and moss-covered vegetation while reflecting on the landscapes and challenges experienced throughout your seven-day expedition. Eventually, you will reach Mweka Gate, where the formal mountain journey comes to an end and you can celebrate the achievement with the team that supported your climb. After completing the necessary checkout procedures, you will meet your vehicle for the drive back to Moshi. For an AFCON visitor, this final day marks the completion of much more than a hiking tour: you will return from Kilimanjaro having experienced one of Tanzania’s greatest attractions and carrying a remarkable achievement alongside the football memories that originally brought you to the country.
Attractions: Mweka rainforest, tropical vegetation, mountain birds, Mweka Gate and Kilimanjaro climbing celebration.
Altitude: Approximately 3,100 m down to around 1,640 m.
Trekking Time: Approximately 3–4 hours.
Distance: Approximately 10 km.
