Explore Tanzania Beyond Football on the Scenic Lemosho Kilimanjaro Trek

Make your AFCON 2027 journey to Tanzania more meaningful by combining the excitement of African football with a seven-day adventure on Mount Kilimanjaro, one of the country’s most remarkable natural attractions. This 7-day Lemosho Kilimanjaro trek is designed for travelers who want to discover Tanzania beyond the football atmosphere and experience the country through its landscapes, wilderness, people and highest mountain. The AFCON travel period provides a great opportunity to include Kilimanjaro in your Tanzania itinerary, whether you choose to climb before your football activities, during an extended stay, or after the tournament experience. The Lemosho Route approaches the mountain from its beautiful western side, beginning in lush rainforest before opening onto the spectacular Shira Plateau and continuing through volcanic landscapes, Lava Tower, Barranco Valley, Karanga and Barafu before the final ascent to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. With separate nights at Karanga and Barafu, this seven-day itinerary provides a more gradual progression than shorter versions and gives you valuable time to experience the changing environments of Kilimanjaro. For AFCON travelers, this is more than a mountain trek: it is an opportunity to see Tanzania from another perspective, moving from the passion of football to the silence of the mountain and discovering why Kilimanjaro remains one of Africa’s most iconic travel experiences.

Day by day Itinerary

Day 1: Moshi to Lemosho Gate – Trek to Big Tree Camp

Moshi to Lemosho Gate – Trek to Big Tree Camp

Your seven-day Kilimanjaro adventure begins in Moshi, where our professional mountain team will meet you before driving toward Lemosho Gate on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. As you leave the town behind, the journey introduces you to the greener foothills and rural landscapes surrounding Africa’s highest mountain, giving AFCON visitors an early glimpse of Tanzania beyond stadiums and football activities. After completing the required park procedures, you will begin trekking through Kilimanjaro’s lush montane rainforest, surrounded by towering trees, giant ferns, moss-covered vegetation and the sounds of forest birds. The western approach is peaceful and scenic, allowing you to gradually settle into the rhythm of mountain life while your guide encourages the slow “pole pole” pace that will remain important throughout the climb. Blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys may sometimes be encountered among the trees as you gain elevation. Eventually, you will reach Big Tree Camp, also known as Mti Mkubwa, where your first day on Kilimanjaro comes to an end and the football-focused part of your Tanzania journey begins transforming into a true mountain adventure.

Attractions: Lemosho Gate, western Kilimanjaro rainforest, giant ferns, forest birds, mountain vegetation and possible monkey sightings.

Altitude: Approximately 2,100 m to around 2,650–2,800 m.

Trekking Time: Approximately 3–4 hours.

Distance: Approximately 6–7 km.

Day 2: Big Tree Camp via Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp

Big Tree Camp via Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp

After leaving Big Tree Camp, you will continue climbing as the thick rainforest gradually disappears and the landscape opens into heath and moorland. This changing environment is one of the most impressive features of Kilimanjaro, allowing you to experience several ecological zones within only a few days. The trail becomes steeper as you climb onto the enormous Shira Plateau, where volcanic landscapes, open skies and increasingly wide views replace the dense forest scenery of the previous day. You will pass through the Shira 1 area and continue toward Shira 2, enjoying outstanding views of Kibo whenever the weather is clear. From the plateau, the mountain feels much larger and more dramatic, while the plains of northern Tanzania stretch far into the distance below. For travelers who came to Tanzania primarily for AFCON, this is often the moment when the journey begins to feel completely different: football crowds and city activity are replaced by open wilderness, fresh mountain air and the incredible scale of Kilimanjaro. Your guide will keep the pace steady and controlled throughout the day as you continue adapting to the increasing altitude.

Attractions: Shira Plateau, Shira 1, Shira 2, Kibo views, heath and moorland, volcanic landscapes and wide views over Tanzania.

Altitude: Approximately 2,650–2,800 m to around 3,850 m.

Trekking Time: Approximately 7–9 hours.

Distance: Approximately 14–17 km.

Day 3: Shira 2 Camp via Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Shira 2 Camp via Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Today takes you deeper into Kilimanjaro’s high-altitude environment and plays an important role in acclimatization. Leaving Shira 2, you will trek eastward across increasingly dry and rugged terrain toward Lava Tower, a striking volcanic formation situated at approximately 4,600 meters. Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as the landscape changes into alpine desert, creating an entirely different atmosphere from the rainforest and moorland experienced earlier. Reaching Lava Tower allows your body to experience a higher elevation before descending again toward Barranco, following the valuable “climb high, sleep lower” acclimatization pattern. From Lava Tower, the trail descends into Barranco Valley, where giant groundsels and other distinctive high-altitude plants create a dramatic natural setting beneath towering cliffs. As you approach Barranco, the famous Barranco Wall rises directly ahead, providing an exciting preview of the following morning’s challenge. For AFCON travelers, this day demonstrates how much variety Tanzania can offer within one journey—from football celebrations to a volcanic mountain wilderness more than four thousand meters above sea level.

Attractions: Lava Tower, alpine desert, volcanic formations, Barranco Valley, giant groundsels, Kibo views and Barranco Wall.

Altitude: Approximately 3,850 m to 4,600 m at Lava Tower, then down to around 3,900 m.

Trekking Time: Approximately 6–8 hours.

Distance: Approximately 10 km.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp – Barranco Wall Adventure

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp – Barranco Wall Adventure

Your fourth day begins with the famous Barranco Wall, one of the most exciting and photographed sections of the Lemosho Route. From below, the wall appears dramatic, but the ascent follows a well-established scrambling trail and does not require technical climbing experience. Your guide will lead you carefully upward, helping you through the steeper sections while allowing time to enjoy impressive views over Barranco Valley and the surrounding mountain terrain. Once you reach the top, the route continues across a series of ridges and valleys before descending toward the Karanga Valley and climbing again toward Karanga Camp. Because this seven-day itinerary stops at Karanga instead of immediately continuing to Barafu, you gain a valuable extra day at altitude and more time to recover before reaching the summit base. The shorter trekking section also allows you to appreciate the scenery instead of rushing through it. For travelers extending an AFCON trip, this is exactly what makes Kilimanjaro special: each day reveals another side of Tanzania, combining physical challenge with landscapes completely different from those found in the country’s cities and football venues.

Attractions: Barranco Wall, Karanga Valley, high-altitude ridges, Kibo views, volcanic terrain and alpine scenery.

Altitude: Approximately 3,900 m to around 3,995 m.

Trekking Time: Approximately 4–5 hours.

Distance: Approximately 5 km.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp – Final Summit Preparation

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp – Final Summit Preparation

After your important acclimatization night at Karanga, you will continue toward Barafu Camp, the final major base before attempting the summit. The route gradually climbs through increasingly barren alpine desert where vegetation becomes limited and volcanic rock dominates the landscape. Although the trekking distance is relatively short, the thin air makes a slow and controlled pace essential. Your guide will closely monitor your condition and encourage you to conserve energy throughout the journey. As you approach Barafu, you may enjoy dramatic views toward Mawenzi and the upper slopes of Kibo, while the harsh high-altitude environment reminds you that you are now close to the summit of Africa. On arrival, your guide will explain the summit plan in detail and help you prepare your clothing, headlamp, gloves, water and other essential items for the nighttime ascent. The remainder of the day is dedicated to resting and mentally preparing for the challenge ahead. What began as an AFCON holiday in Tanzania is now only hours away from becoming a journey to the highest point on the African continent.

Attractions: Alpine desert, Barafu ridge, Mawenzi views, Kibo slopes and high-altitude volcanic scenery.

Altitude: Approximately 3,995 m to around 4,673 m.

Trekking Time: Approximately 3–4 hours.

Distance: Approximately 4 km.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak – Descend to Mweka Camp

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak – Descend to Mweka Camp

Your summit adventure begins around midnight when you leave Barafu Camp and start the slow ascent through darkness toward the crater rim. This is the most demanding part of the entire expedition, requiring patience, determination and a steady pace as you climb through steep scree in cold, high-altitude conditions. Your guide will provide encouragement and carefully monitor your progress while you continue toward Stella Point. As dawn approaches, the sky begins to brighten over Mawenzi and the surrounding landscapes, creating one of the most unforgettable views on Mount Kilimanjaro. From Stella Point, you will continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point in Africa. Reaching the summit gives your Tanzania journey an entirely new meaning. You may have traveled to the country because of AFCON football, but standing at Uhuru Peak allows you to experience Tanzania through one of its greatest natural symbols and carry home a memory far beyond the tournament itself. After photographs and a short celebration, you will begin descending to Barafu and then continue much farther down the mountain toward Mweka Camp, completing an extremely demanding but rewarding day.

Attractions: Stella Point, Uhuru Peak, Kilimanjaro glaciers, sunrise, crater rim, Mawenzi and panoramic summit views.

Altitude: Approximately 4,673 m to 5,895 m at Uhuru Peak, then down to around 3,100 m.

Trekking Time: Approximately 11–14 hours.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Return to Moshi

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Return to Moshi

Your final day begins with a relaxed descent through the increasingly green lower slopes of Kilimanjaro. As you leave Mweka Camp, the alpine environment gradually gives way to lush montane rainforest, bringing back the giant ferns, taller trees, forest birds and richer vegetation seen earlier in the journey. The warmer air and increased oxygen make the final walk more comfortable, providing time to reflect on everything you have experienced during the previous seven days. You will eventually reach Mweka Gate, where the mountain journey officially comes to an end and you can celebrate with the team that supported you throughout the expedition. After completing the necessary checkout procedures, you will meet your vehicle and return to Moshi. For an AFCON 2027 traveler, this final drive completes an extraordinary combination: the passion and excitement of African football together with a deep exploration of Tanzania through its forests, high-altitude wilderness and the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Attractions: Mweka rainforest, mountain vegetation, forest birds, Mweka Gate and Kilimanjaro climbing celebration.

Altitude: Approximately 3,100 m down to around 1,640 m.

Trekking Time: Approximately 3–4 hours.

Distance: Approximately 10 km.
