Discover the peaceful night skies of Mount Kilimanjaro during this 7-day Umbwe Route New Moon hiking adventure. You will begin along the quiet southern side of the mountain, hike through a dense tropical forest and follow the steep Umbwe Ridge toward Barranco Camp, where you will spend an additional day improving your acclimatization. The journey will continue through Karanga and Barafu before your overnight hike toward Uhuru Peak. During the new moon period, limited natural moonlight may reveal clearer stars, mountain silhouettes and the distant lights below Kilimanjaro when weather conditions are favourable. Our experienced guides will control the hiking pace, monitor your altitude response and prepare you for the colder and darker summit journey. This adventure is ideal for fit hikers, stargazers, photographers and travellers searching for a quiet and distinctive Kilimanjaro experience.
Daily Hiking Length: Approximately 10–11 km
Estimated Time on Trail: Approximately 5–7 hours
Departure Altitude: Umbwe Gate at approximately 1,650 m
Arrival Altitude: Umbwe Cave Camp at approximately 2,900 m
Elevation Increase: Approximately 1,250 m
Mountain Environment: Tropical montane rainforest
Your New Moon hiking adventure will begin at Umbwe Gate, where our guides will complete the national park registration and inspect your essential mountain equipment. You will enter a humid rainforest filled with tall trees, tangled roots, moss, ferns and rich tropical vegetation. The Umbwe trail rises steeply through the forest and follows a quiet ridge with fewer hikers than many of Kilimanjaro’s popular approaches. Our guides will encourage you to use short steps, drink water regularly and conserve your energy before arriving at Umbwe Cave Camp.
Daily Hiking Length: Approximately 6–7 km
Estimated Time on Trail: Approximately 5–6 hours
Departure Altitude: Umbwe Cave Camp at approximately 2,900 m
Arrival Altitude: Barranco Camp at approximately 3,950 m
Elevation Increase: Approximately 1,050 m
Mountain Environment: Heather and moorland entering the alpine zone
After breakfast, you will continue hiking along the upper Umbwe Ridge as the thick rainforest begins to disappear. Giant heather, low shrubs and open slopes will replace the dense forest, allowing you to enjoy wider views of valleys and Kilimanjaro’s southern face. The considerable altitude gain makes this a demanding hiking day, so our guides will maintain a slow and consistent rhythm while observing how your body is adapting. You will finish the day at Barranco Camp beneath the impressive Barranco Wall.
Acclimatization Length: Approximately 3–4 km
Estimated Activity Time: Approximately 2–4 hours
Base Altitude: Barranco Camp at approximately 3,950 m
Maximum Hiking Altitude: Approximately 4,150–4,300 m
Sleeping Altitude: Barranco Camp at approximately 3,950 m
Mountain Environment: Upper moorland and alpine desert
You will remain at Barranco Camp for a valuable acclimatization and recovery day. When your health and weather conditions are suitable, our guide will lead you on a gradual hike to a higher elevation before returning to camp to sleep lower. The additional day will also give you time to rest, enjoy the Barranco Valley and observe the unusual giant groundsels growing around the campsite. After sunset, the limited moonlight may provide beautiful views of stars and mountain silhouettes when the sky is clear.
Daily Hiking Length: Approximately 5–6 km
Estimated Time on Trail: Approximately 4–6 hours
Departure Altitude: Barranco Camp at approximately 3,950 m
Arrival Altitude: Karanga Camp at approximately 4,035 m
Elevation Difference: Approximately 85 m net gain with repeated ascents and descents
Mountain Environment: Rocky alpine desert
You will begin the morning by hiking and scrambling up the famous Barranco Wall. This steep section does not normally require technical equipment, but it demands patience, balance and careful movement. Our guides will show you suitable hand and foot placements while helping you pass through the narrower areas safely. After reaching the upper ridge, you will enjoy wide views of Kilimanjaro’s southern glaciers before following an undulating path across several valleys. The final section descends into Karanga Valley and rises again toward Karanga Camp.
Daily Hiking Length: Approximately 4–5 km
Estimated Time on Trail: Approximately 3–5 hours
Departure Altitude: Karanga Camp at approximately 4,035 m
Arrival Altitude: Barafu Camp at approximately 4,640 m
Elevation Increase: Approximately 605 m
Mountain Environment: Exposed high-altitude desert
You will leave Karanga Camp and hike through a dry volcanic landscape toward Barafu Camp, your final base before the overnight summit journey. Vegetation will become increasingly limited, and cold winds may cross the exposed slopes. Although the distance is not long, the reduced oxygen may make every step feel more demanding. After reaching Barafu, you will arrange your warm clothing, headlamp, spare batteries, trekking poles and drinking water. Our lead guide will explain the summit schedule and prepare you for hiking in the darker conditions of the new moon.
Total Hiking Length: Approximately 17–18 km
Estimated Time on Trail: Approximately 12–16 hours
Departure Altitude: Barafu Camp at approximately 4,640 m
Highest Altitude: Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m
Final Camp Altitude: Mweka Camp at approximately 3,100 m
Elevation Movement: Approximately 1,255 m ascent followed by about 2,795 m descent
Mountain Environment: Arctic summit zone descending into alpine desert and moorland
Your summit hike will begin close to midnight under the dark skies of the new moon. You will rely on your headlamp as you move slowly over loose volcanic scree toward Stella Point. When clouds are absent, the reduced moonlight may make the stars appear brighter and reveal the silhouettes of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding mountain slopes. Our guides will remain close, monitor your condition and maintain a careful hiking rhythm throughout the ascent. After reaching Stella Point, you will continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak, where you can celebrate reaching the highest point in Africa. You will then descend to Barafu for a short recovery break before continuing down to Mweka Camp.
Daily Hiking Length: Approximately 10–11 km
Estimated Time on Trail: Approximately 3–5 hours
Departure Altitude: Mweka Camp at approximately 3,100 m
Final Altitude: Mweka Gate at approximately 1,640 m
Elevation Decrease: Approximately 1,460 m
Mountain Environment: Lush montane rainforest
After breakfast, you will complete your final hiking section through the green Mweka rainforest. The warmer conditions and increased oxygen will provide welcome relief after the cold summit environment. You may hear mountain birds or see monkeys as you follow the forest trail toward Mweka Gate. The path may contain mud, roots and slippery steps, so our guides will encourage careful movement. At the gate, you will complete the departure procedures and receive a certificate based on the highest point reached before our driver transfers you to Moshi.

A new moon departure offers darker nighttime conditions because very little natural moonlight is visible. When the weather is clear, you may see brighter stars, clearer mountain silhouettes and a more dramatic sky during the summit hike.
You will use a reliable headlamp throughout the nighttime hike from Barafu Camp. Our guides will lead the group along the correct trail, maintain safe spacing and assist you through loose or uneven sections.
You should bring one dependable headlamp, spare batteries and a small backup light where possible. The cold can reduce battery performance, so all lighting equipment should be tested before leaving Moshi.
Yes. Clouds, fog, snow or rain may hide the stars and reduce visibility. Although dark skies are part of the package concept, clear views cannot be guaranteed because mountain weather changes quickly.
It can be suitable for physically prepared hikers who are comfortable walking in darkness. Our guides will explain the night-hiking procedure, maintain a slow pace and keep participants close together throughout the summit section.
The route’s physical challenge remains mainly connected to steep terrain, altitude and cold temperatures. However, reduced visibility can make summit night feel more demanding, especially for hikers without previous nighttime trekking experience.
You may photograph stars, tents, climbers’ headlamps, dark ridgelines and sunrise from the upper slopes. A lightweight tripod, wide-angle lens, spare batteries and waterproof camera protection can be useful.
The Umbwe Route gains altitude rapidly during the first two days. The additional Barranco day allows you to recover, complete a gentle acclimatization hike and prepare more effectively for Karanga, Barafu and the summit attempt.
Yes. The tour may be organized as a private hike for solo travellers, couples, friends or small groups. A private arrangement provides closer guiding attention and greater flexibility within the fixed mountain itinerary.
Yes. After completing the Umbwe Route, you can add a safari in Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro or Lake Manyara. You may also continue to Zanzibar for a relaxing beach holiday after the mountain.
