Elevation: 1,828m (5,997ft) - 3,032m (9,948ft) Average hiking time: 7 hours After a one-hour drive from Moshi, you will arrive at the Machame Park Gate. Before starting your hike, you will need to sign the park register. The trail follows a ridge through a dense mountain forest, which is the primary water source for Kilimanjaro. The area is incredibly lush and beautiful, especially on sunny days. However, it can also be muddy, particularly after rainfall. You will stop for lunch at a clearing called "Halfway Clearing" before continuing the ascent. As you approach the Machame Camp, you may catch your first glimpse of the glacial dome of Kibo, weather permitting. You will spend the night at Machame Camp in tents and enjoy your meals in a dinner tent.

From there, you will have excellent views of Kibo and the jagged rim of the Shira Plateau. The trail continues less steeply to reach the Shira Plateau, where you will set up camp at Shira Cave Camp. This camp offers breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro, including the volcanic cone of Kibo and the stunning rock formations of the Shira Plateau. Mount Meru can be seen floating on the clouds, providing an unforgettable backdrop.
