The adventure begins as we depart from Moshi and head to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate through the charming Village of Machame. Excitement fills the air as we await the issuance of our permits, observing the bustling activities of various crews preparing for their Kilimanjaro ascent. Surrounded by lush rainforest scenery, we embark on the trek, led by our experienced guide who enlightens us about the local flora, fauna, and wildlife. The trail winds its way through the rainforest, which can be muddy and slippery, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended to ensure a steady and enjoyable trek.

Refreshed after a restful night's sleep and a hearty breakfast, we leave the rainforest behind and continue our ascent along a steep rocky ridge, crossing the valley with stunning views all around. The trail now leads westward, meandering through a picturesque river gorge until we reach the Shira campsite. As we gain elevation, the temperature starts to drop, reminding us that we are approaching the moorland zone.

On this crucial day for acclimatization, we venture eastward from Shira Plateau, ascending a ridge that leads us to the junction towards the Kibo peak. Continuing southeast, we encounter the magnificent Lava Tower, a volcanic formation also known as the "Shark's Tooth" standing tall at an elevation of 4650m/15,250ft. After passing the Lava Tower, we come across another junction leading to the Arrow Glacier. From there, we descend to the Barranco Camp where we spend the night, surrounded by breathtaking semi-desert landscapes.

Following breakfast, we embark on a challenging ascent up the Barranco Wall, an awe-inspiring rock formation that showcases the exceptional skills and agility of our crew members. Upon conquering the wall, we make our way to the Karanga Valley, where the trail intersects with the Mweka Trail. The alpine desert greets us with its unique beauty as we settle in for the night at the Karanga Camp.

The journey continues upward towards Barafu Camp, marking the completion of the South Circuit. Along the way, we are blessed with various breathtaking views of the summit from different angles, reminding us of the grandeur that awaits us. Once we reach Barafu Camp, we rest and prepare for the highlight of the expedition – summit night.

The most physically and mentally demanding part of the trek begins in the early hours, usually between midnight and 2 a.m. We push forward towards the summit, navigating between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, determined to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro and the entire African continent. As we ascend towards Stella Point on the crater rim, the breathtaking sunrise greets us, offering a sense of awe and accomplishment. Depending on the pace, some may witness the sunrise from the summit itself. After capturing memories and celebrating our triumph, we descend to Mweka Camp through snow-covered terrain, and with each step, we leave the glaciers behind, descending to an altitude of 3106m/10,190ft.
