Experience a 7day Kilimanjaro climbing adventure via the Rongai route ascending to the summit of Africa highest peak
The Rongai route, the northern approach to Kilimanjaro near Kenya's border, is gaining favor among climbers for its solitude. This route requires a minimum of seven days. While the scenery may not match the western routes, Rongai compensates with pristine wilderness, immersing trekkers in nature before connecting with the Marangu route at Kibo camp. Moderately challenging, it's a top pick, especially for less experienced backpackers, offering a unique Kilimanjaro adventure.
Setting off from Nalemoru Gate (1990m), we embark on the Rongai route adventure. The initial stretch leads us through picturesque farmland and enchanting pine forests. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for captivating Colobus monkeys and, if fortune smiles upon us, you might catch glimpses of majestic elephants or formidable buffalos. Our first day's journey culminates at Simba Camp, perched on the cusp of the moorland zone at 2625m.

Today we embark on Day 3 of our ascent to the summit of Kilimanjaro. We leave the lush pine forest behind and trek through moorland, enjoying stunning views of Kibo's crater rim and the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. As we continue our ascent, the terrain becomes more challenging, but our determination and teamwork keep us going. We set up camp at Kikelewa Valley at 3630m, where the air is thin and the nights are cold. Tomorrow, we will continue our ascent towards the summit, braving the thin air and treacherous terrain in pursuit of our goal.

As we start our ascent on Day 4, we are greeted with a beautiful sight of the Kenyan plains stretching out before us. The grassy slopes are steep, but the exhilarating view makes it worthwhile. We reach Mawenzi Tarn Hut, nestled at the foot of the towering cliffs of Mawenzi, and are awestruck by its beauty. The hut is surrounded by a breathtaking landscape, with the turquoise waters of Mawenzi Tarn reflecting the surrounding peaks. We take some time to rest and acclimatize, exploring the surrounding area and taking in the stunning views. The air is thin, but the serene surroundings help us to relax and recharge. Tomorrow, we will continue our ascent towards the summit, but for now, we are content to enjoy the beauty of our surroundings and take in the breathtaking views of Mawenzi.

We begin our ascent by leaving Mawenzi Tarn Hut and crossing the lunar desert of the 'saddle' between Mawenzi and Kibo. The trek is challenging, but the breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro's summit make it worthwhile. As we trek, we can see the trail stretching out before us, leading us to Kibo Hut, our high camp. Upon reaching Kibo Hut, we are awestruck by the spectacular view of the summit and the surrounding landscape. The remainder of the day is spent resting and preparing for the final ascent.
