7 Days Premium Birdwatching Tour in Kenya from Nairobi

Across the Great Rift Valley
You will be collected from JKIA or your Nairobi hotel between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. for the 270–300 km journey to Maasai Mara. The drive takes 5½–6½ hours, excluding extended stops, and passes through the Great Rift Valley and Narok. Our guide will make sensible comfort stops while watching for roadside raptors, storks and other visible species without delaying the main safari.

Introductory Mara Birding
After lunch, check-in and a short rest, you will leave at approximately 3:30 p.m. for your first game drive. The open plains and scattered acacias may reveal secretarybirds, bustards, rollers, hornbills, lapwings, starlings and birds of prey. Zebras, giraffes, elephants, antelopes and predators may also be encountered naturally. Return near sunset for dinner, checklist updates and a briefing about the following day’s birdwatching plan.

Early Activity on the Plains
Breakfast is served at approximately 6:00 a.m., followed by departure between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. Cooler conditions can be productive for observing bird calls, feeding activity and raptors preparing to use rising air currents. Our guide will explore grasslands, seasonal streams and scattered woodland according to bird activity, road access and recent local information.

Birding at a Patient Pace
Possible species include southern ground hornbills, kori bustards, lilac-breasted rollers, crowned lapwings, ostriches, vultures and other raptors. Identification will be based on visible characteristics and calls rather than uncertain guesses. Mammal encounters remain an important part of the experience, but the vehicle will not rush away from rewarding bird activity.

Afternoon Observations
A picnic lunch will be served at an authorized location between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. Birdwatching continues during the afternoon before returning to camp at approximately 5:30–6:00 p.m. for dinner and checklist review.

Exploring a Different Habitat
Your second full Maasai Mara birding day begins after breakfast at approximately 6:30 a.m. Depending on your accommodation, weather and road conditions, our guide may explore riverine woodland, marshy areas or another section of open savannah. The varied habitats improve opportunities to observe species that may not have appeared during the previous day.

Calls, Behaviour and Field Marks
The guide will help you compare plumage, flight patterns, calls and feeding behaviour. Potential subjects include kingfishers, bee-eaters, woodpeckers, weavers, sunbirds, herons and raptors, depending on the area visited. A picnic lunch will be enjoyed at an approved site between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m.

Final Mara Checklist
The afternoon provides time to revisit productive habitats and photograph birds under warmer evening light. Seasonal migrants may increase diversity during certain months, but no exact checklist can be guaranteed. Return before reserve closing time for dinner and your final Maasai Mara overnight.

From Savannah to Highland Country
After breakfast, check out at approximately 7:30 a.m. and begin the 235–280 km drive towards Lake Nakuru. The journey takes 5–6½ hours, depending on your departure gate, weather, road conditions and traffic. Your guide may point out clearly visible roadside birds, although stops will be made only where parking is safe and permitted.

Preparing for Lakeshore Birding
Lunch will be served during the journey or after arrival. You will check into your premium Lake Nakuru accommodation during the afternoon and have time to rest, recharge equipment and update your checklist. If sufficient daylight remains and park access is practical, a brief introductory drive may be arranged. Otherwise, enjoy the lodge surroundings and prepare binoculars, cameras and field guides for the early game drive. Dinner and overnight will be in the Lake Nakuru area.

Woodland and Alkaline-Lake Species
Following an early breakfast, enter Lake Nakuru National Park between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. During the three- to four-hour game drive, our guide will explore accessible lakeshore, grassland and acacia woodland habitats. Possible observations include pelicans, cormorants, herons, egrets, kingfishers, raptors and woodland species. Flamingo numbers vary according to water depth, food availability and regional movement, so large concentrations cannot be promised. Rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes, buffaloes, zebras and baboons may also be encountered.

Freshwater Birding at Naivasha
Continue 70–100 km to your Lake Naivasha accommodation, a journey of 1½–2 hours depending on the selected property. After lunch and check-in, enjoy relaxed birdwatching from lodge-approved areas. An optional boat excursion can provide opportunities to observe African fish eagles, cormorants, kingfishers and waterbirds. Boating remains subject to weather, lake conditions and operator safety approval.

South towards Amboseli
After breakfast, check out and depart between 7:00 and 7:30 a.m. The journey to the Amboseli area covers 310–360 km and normally takes 6–7½ hours, excluding lunch, comfort stops and Nairobi-area traffic. Keep binoculars and cameras accessible, although roadside observations will be made only from safe locations.

Wetlands and Open-Country Birds
You will arrive at your premium lodge or camp during the afternoon. After check-in and a short rest, depart at around 4:00 p.m. for an introductory game drive when daylight and park access permit. Amboseli’s wetlands, dry plains and acacia areas can support egrets, herons, cranes, raptors, larks, pipits and other open-country birds. Elephants, giraffes, buffaloes and antelopes may also be observed. Mount Kilimanjaro may appear when cloud conditions allow. Return near sunset for dinner and checklist updates.

Final Wetland Birding
Wake at approximately 5:30 a.m. for tea or coffee before beginning an early game drive. Our guide will explore wetland edges, open plains and suitable woodland while listening for calls and watching feeding activity. Possible observations include pelicans, egrets, herons, crowned cranes, raptors and smaller grassland birds. Species presence changes with water levels, rainfall and seasonal movement.

Completing the Journey
Return to the lodge for breakfast and check out between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. You will then travel 215–240 km to Nairobi via Emali, a drive of 4–5 hours excluding lunch and city traffic. Use the journey to review your checklist and discuss any uncertain identifications with the guide. Drop-off is available at JKIA, Wilson Airport or a Nairobi hotel. Travellers using an international flight should select a late-evening departure or book an additional Nairobi night.
