Nairobi Departure
Pickup from JKIA or your Nairobi hotel takes place between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. You will travel 270–300 km to Maasai Mara, requiring 5½–6½ hours excluding extended stops. The road descends into the Great Rift Valley before continuing through Narok towards the selected reserve gate. A viewpoint or comfort stop will be made when conditions permit.

Maasai Mara – Full-Day Drive across the Savannah

Early Road into the Reserve
Breakfast will be served at approximately 6:00 a.m. before departure between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. Our guide will select authorized tracks according to wildlife activity, road conditions and recent information. The Mara’s open terrain provides extensive views, but black-cotton-soil tracks can become challenging after heavy rain.

Picnic and Wildlife Viewing
The drive explores grassland, acacia-dotted plains and riverine habitats. Possible encounters include elephants, lions, cheetahs, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas and birds, although no species is guaranteed. A picnic lunch is served at an authorized location between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m.

Evening Return
Continue the road safari through another accessible section before returning between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. for dinner and relaxation at your premium accommodation.

Maasai Mara – A Second Complete Day on Safari Roads

Flexible Route Planning
After breakfast, depart at approximately 6:30 a.m. for another full-day game drive. A second complete day allows the guide to explore a different reserve sector or revisit productive wildlife areas without changing accommodation. The final direction will depend on accessible tracks, weather and natural animal movement.

Rivers, Plains and Wildlife
The route may include open grassland, marshy areas or river corridors. Migration herds may be present during parts of the year, but exact locations and crossings cannot be guaranteed. A picnic lunch is arranged between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m., allowing you to remain inside the reserve.

Final Mara Drive
The afternoon offers a final opportunity to observe landscapes and animal behaviour before returning at approximately 5:30–6:00 p.m. Dinner and overnight prepare you for the following day’s longer road transfer.

Our guide will schedule safe comfort stops while you travel from savannah through highland agricultural country.

Premium Nakuru Arrival
Lunch will be arranged during the journey or after arrival. Check into your premium Lake Nakuru accommodation during the afternoon and rest. A short game drive may be possible if sufficient daylight remains and park access is practical. Otherwise, enjoy the lodge, recharge equipment and prepare for an early departure. Dinner and overnight will be in the Lake Nakuru area.

Day 5: Lake Nakuru Game Drive and Short Road to Naivasha

Lake Nakuru Game Drive and Short Road to Naivasha

Nakuru’s Compact Wildlife Circuit
After an early breakfast, enter Lake Nakuru National Park between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. The three- to four-hour drive follows authorized roads through woodland, grassland and accessible lakeshore areas. Wildlife may include rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, baboons and birds. Flamingo numbers vary with lake conditions.

Road to Lake Naivasha
Continue 70–100 km to your Lake Naivasha accommodation, taking 1½–2 hours depending on the property and route. After lunch and check-in, enjoy a restful afternoon that breaks up the longer overland journey. An optional approved boat excursion may be arranged, subject to weather and water conditions. Follow lodge instructions around unfenced grounds because hippos and other wildlife may be present. Dinner and overnight are beside the lake.

Lake Naivasha to Amboseli – Kenya’s Long Scenic Southern Route

Full Overland Journey
Enjoy breakfast at approximately 6:30 a.m., then check out and depart between 7:00 and 7:30 a.m. The drive to Amboseli covers 310–360 km and requires 6–7½ hours, excluding lunch, comfort stops and Nairobi-area congestion. This is the itinerary’s longest transfer, so our guide will plan practical breaks and provide updated arrival expectations.

Evening in Amboseli
Arrive at your premium lodge or camp during the afternoon. After check-in and a short rest, begin a game drive at around 4:00 p.m. if daylight and access permit. Amboseli’s open roads cross dry plains, wetland areas and acacia habitats where elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras and birds may be seen. Kilimanjaro visibility depends on cloud cover. Return near sunset for dinner.

Final Park Drive
Wake at approximately 5:30 a.m. for tea or coffee before departing for an early drive. The cooler hours offer a rewarding final opportunity to explore wetland edges and open plains. Our guide will maintain authorized routes and responsible viewing distances while searching for elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, antelopes, predators and waterbirds.

Drive-out via Emali
Return for breakfast and check out between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. The final road journey covers 215–240 km to Nairobi via Emali and takes 4–5 hours excluding lunch and city traffic. Drop-off is available at JKIA, Wilson Airport or your Nairobi hotel. Book a late-evening international departure or an additional Nairobi overnight because traffic, roadworks and weather can affect arrival time.

RELATED FAQS ABOUT 7 Days Premium Kenya Road Safari from Nairobi

    1. What does drive-in drive-out mean?

It means you will travel from Nairobi to all listed safari destinations by road and return to Nairobi by road. Domestic flights are not used unless requested as a customized upgrade. Overland travel lets you observe more of Kenya’s landscapes and everyday countryside.

    2. How much driving is involved?

Transfer days range from short 1½–2-hour journeys to longer drives of 6–7½ hours. Game drives add additional time inside protected areas. Travellers should be comfortable spending several hours in a vehicle, although practical comfort stops are scheduled.

    3. What vehicle is used?

A safari-configured 4x4 vehicle is generally used, with viewing windows and a roof suitable for game viewing. Exact vehicle style, maximum seating and whether transport is private or shared will be stated in the confirmed quotation.

    4. Are the road distances exact?

The itinerary provides realistic distance ranges because the total changes according to the lodge, reserve gate and route used. Driving time can also change because of traffic, weather, roadworks and road conditions. Your guide will provide daily updates.

    5. Is a road safari suitable for children or elderly travellers?

It can be suitable, but individual mobility, health and tolerance for long drives must be considered. A private vehicle, extra rest night or shorter route can improve comfort. Travellers with medical conditions should consult an appropriate healthcare professional before departure.

    6. How should we pack for the vehicle?

Use soft-sided luggage because it fits more easily into safari vehicles. Bring only essential clothing, medication, sun protection and personal equipment. Hard suitcases and excessive baggage can reduce passenger comfort and may require a separate luggage arrangement.

    7. Are toilets available during transfers?

The guide will stop at suitable fuel stations, restaurants or designated facilities along the route. Facilities vary in standard, especially in remote areas. Carry tissues, hand sanitizer and small change for facilities that charge an access fee.

    8. What happens if a road becomes difficult?

The guide will assess conditions and use a safe alternative route where practical. Heavy rain, damaged roads or congestion may extend the journey or change a planned activity. Safety takes priority over maintaining an unrealistic arrival time.

    9. Can we fly back from the final destination?

Yes. A customized itinerary may replace selected road sectors with domestic flights, subject to schedules, baggage limits, airstrip transfers and additional costs. This would no longer be a complete drive-in drive-out package.

    10. Can we add more rest time?

Yes. Additional nights can be added in Maasai Mara, Lake Naivasha or Amboseli. This is particularly useful for families, senior travellers and guests who prefer shorter daily drives. Any changes should be confirmed before accommodation reservations are finalized.
