Arusha to Tarangire National Park Manyara/Karatu

Your safari begins with a drive from Arusha to Tarangire National Park. The journey takes 2.5 hours and covers 120 kilometers. In May, Tarangire is lush and the baobab trees are in full leaf. You will spend the afternoon on a game drive looking for elephants and rare birds. A positive moment many travelers enjoy is seeing the lush marshes teeming with life and different water birds. After breakfast, you will drive toward the Serengeti National Park, passing through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The travel time is about 4 to 6 hours covering 200 kilometers. As you enter the Serengeti, you will start a half-day game drive in the central plains. In May, the grass is long and the predators are very active. A surprising moment occurs when the thick highlands turn into the endless green plains of the Serengeti. You will spend the night at a camp or lodge in the central region.

You will see large hippos and crocodiles in the full Mara River. A positive moment is seeing the lush riverbanks teeming with rare bird species and resident wildlife without any crowds. You return to your camp for dinner.

The drive is approximately 150 kilometers and takes about 4 hours with game viewing along the way. You might encounter a cheetah mother teaching her cubs how to hunt in the long grass. This transition back to the center provides a different perspective on the park ecosystem. You will overnight in the central Serengeti area.

As you reach the rim, the temperature drops and the air becomes crisp. A positive and unexpected moment is the first view of the crater floor from the lookout point at sunset. It is one of the most beautiful sights in Africa. You will stay at a lodge on the rim or in nearby Karatu.
