Today's trek involves gaining about 800 meters in elevation, gradually acclimatizing your body as you reach heights above 4,500 meters. The trek starts with a steady ascent above the Shira Plateau, leading to the Lava Tower. You continue eastward along a ridge, passing the junction towards Kibo peak, then changing direction to the South East, heading to the Lava Tower, aptly named the "Shark’s Tooth." The second junction takes you up to the Arrow Glacier at 16,000 feet. The vegetation becomes sparser as you ascend, transforming the landscape into an afro-alpine desert. The route guides you through the Barranco Valley, adorned with lobelia and giant senecio plants. After 6-7 hours, you'll reach the picturesque Barranco Camp, considered the most beautiful campsite on the mountain. After a night's rest beneath the Great Barranco Wall, you will face the challenge of trekking this impressive barrier. However, fear not, as the ascent is much easier than it appears. Once you conquer this obstacle, you will continue your trek until you reach just below the Heim Glacier. From there, the path descends through the Karanga Valley, which marks the last water point for your porters to collect water for the rest of the journey. The campsite at Karanga is where you'll spend the night. Awaken to the glorious sunlight dancing off the summit of Kibo, and enjoy a hearty breakfast before setting out on today's journey to Barafu Camp. Most of the day will be spent trekking through dry, desertic terrain, with the mighty Kibo ever-present on your left side. After approximately 3 to 4 hours of trekking, you will arrive at Barafu Camp. Here, you will have an early dinner and rest up, as the highlight of your trek is only a few hours away.At this point, you have completed the South Circuit, offering you spectacular views of the summit from various angles. As you make camp at Barafu, take the opportunity to relax, have dinner, and get some rest in preparation for the upcoming summit day. Start your trek before midnight, being greeted with hot tea and a light snack. Head northwest between Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers towards Stella Point on the crater rim, the most challenging part. Take a short break at Stella Point (18,600 ft), witness the awe-inspiring sunrise if weather permits. From there, 1-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro. Descend straight to Mweka Hut campsite via Barafu Camp for lunch. Use gaiters and trekking poles for loose gravel. Mweka Camp in the upper forest region may have mist or rain.
